OK, for 7 Presidential election cycles I’ve voted Republican (though not a registered party member) solely on the basis of the Democratic platform plank regarding abortion. However, with Rudy Giuliani being the likely Republican candidate, I’m looking at an election where I may not have a moral choice. Plus, I disagree with the Republicans on most economic issues. So, I’m seriously thinking about starting a political party based completely on Catholic teaching on morality, social justice, etc.

So, I need a name for this party. However, as I believe that most evangelical Christians will share my views on many of these issues, the name should not exclude these people. Any ideas?

Since we are a Democratic Republic, it’s not surprise that we have the Democrats and the Republicans.

What, then, would a good name be? I suppose it would be partly determined by ideology.

You could choose the Chestertonian Distributivists, but that’s a hearty mouthful (despite being the best political ideology out there, IMHO).

You could choose the American Party, but I’m afraid that wouldn’t be catchy enough. I’m afraid you would need more zazz for it to stick.

Perhaps the Rights Party, which would encourage those on the political right by its very name, basing its platform in the normative teachings of the Natural Law. It also has the ancillary Orwellian benefit of sounding like it is promoting individual human rights - which Natural Law actually does. This name would also be more palatable to Christian Fundamentalists/Evangelicals than the Chestertonian Distributivists, so that’s another benefit. Unfortunately, it also lacks zazz.

I, of course, would prefer the Papist Party, but despite being catchy, I don’t think that would be quite as popular…

You could choose the Party Vitae (Party of Life), but the Latin would surely ostracize some Christians…

Then again, you could always try to revive the Whigs or the Tories under a different ideology…a ‘Tory’ was originally a name given to Irish Roman Catholics who had suffered under Protestant rule, so perhaps it would be more appropriate…

Just my first thoughts.

God Bless,

Before discussing Third Parties, we should study the Constitution of the United States.

Our Constitution is much different from that of most other countries. We have Separation of Powers – the President is elected separately from the Congress and has his own power base. The Justices of the various Courts are appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate – and are thereafter independent.

In Parliamentary systems – such as in England and Canada – the Chief Executive is the Prime Minister, who is appointed by the Majority Party in Parliament. The courts are controlled by the Majority party by various means (including appointing new Peers to sit in the House of Lords).

This means in a Parliamentary system there can be small parties which can band together with larger parties to form a “coalition government.” Such small parties can demand and get power out of proportion to their numbers in return for allowing a larger party to form the government.

That can’t happen under our Constitution. When we get a Third Party man elected to Congress he has virtually no power at all – he can’t even sit in a committee (where all the work is done and the decisions are really made) unless he goes hat-in-hand and begs permission to join a larger party caucus. And he pays for that privilige – just the opposite of what happens in a Parliamentary system.

How about the Pure Party - that would appeal to those on the Left who are fed up of political corruption, and also to those on the Christian Right. You would also have the advantage of being able to use the one colour on the American flag not already taken by the other two!

On second thoughts, with a name like that you might need to do some work to convince people that you’re not a bunch of White Supremacists though! lol

How about ‘B16’. After the Holy Father, but to the liberal Californians, it sounds like a vitamin supplement!:extrahappy:

I would think the “Natural Law” party would be a good name but that is already taken.

So, we want something for conservative Catholics without alienating conservative Protestants?

How about the Christian Democratic-Republican Party. (CDR)?

Anyway, I don’t think a third party would work. It is just not part of American culture. We have always we and “us and them” nation.
