What is the name of the outer vestment worn by priests during Mass (green for ordinary time, red for feast days of martyrs, etc.). Our priest has stopped wearing his and now only wears a stole over his alb (hope that is the right word - the white garment).

That would be the chasuble. And your priest is commiting a liturgical abuse; in fact, I believe the Coucil of Trent mentions something about this.

If the priest is actually celebrating Mass (and not just concelebrating), then he should be wearing the chausible. The alb and stole only doesn’t cut it.

Thank you. I thought it was required but not sure - where can I find documentation stating it’s required?

One more question on terminology - I have always grown up with the words ‘nave’ and ‘sanctuary’. I now hear, more and more in my parish, the term ‘worshp space’ used to describe these areas with no distinction made between the two. I think I know the answer, but is this now the correct terminlogy? Anyone else notice this?

That is the “correct” terminology for the “progressives”. However, some modern churches are so poorly designed, or rather designed with a far too modernist ecclesiology in mind, that there is no longer a distinctive nave or santuary so the plot of carpet with the table/altar in the middle of all the seats is the “worship space” in a church that doesn’t make the proper distinction between sanctuary and nave.

From the document Redemptionis Sacramentum:

"'The vestment proper to the Priest celebrant at Mass, and in other sacred actions directly connected with Mass unless otherwise indicated, is the chasuble, worn over the alb and stole. Likewise the Priest, in putting on the chasuble according to the rubrics, is not to omit the stole. All Ordinaries should be vigilant in order that all usage to the contrary be eradicated. (122-123, also see the GRIM #337)

Since the instruction states that it is the ordinaries responsabilit to ensure that the stole and chasuble are worn correctly, you are well with in your right to notify in writing the local bishop, if after you approch the pastor he fails to ammend his ways.

It’s wrong not to wear the chasuble unless there is a reason why (battlefield Mass, etc.), but it’s certainly not a “liturgical abuse.”

My pastor has problems overheating, and doesn’t often wear his chasuble. I am assuming that he has the Bishop’s permission to do this, so I don’t question it. Period.

I don’t know if I would buy that given how sheer some chasubles are.

Not wearing a chausible is not really an abuse. But i think it is necessary to wear chausible during the mass. If a priest can buy his own car so why not buy his own causible…

And the vestments of the Priests has a very good symbols. From the albs to the chausible… I just dont know if priests still make their prayer while wearing these vestments…

I’ve noticed that, at least in Southern California:D, priests wear the stole over the chasuble. Maybe an exception has been granted.
In poorer countries, parishes don’t always have the full array of vestments, and priests are permited to celebrate Mass with just an alb and stole. Don’t know if this applies to your situation, however.
