Lets assume someone were to make a name for a catholic apologetics group that’s referencing St. Dominic’s dog (e.g. “Dog with a torch”) yet not really be associated with the St. Dominic’s Order of Preachers.

Would this be appropriate or okay to do?

I know it sounds like a dumb question but I’m honestly curious

I don’t see anything wrong with it. Nobody’s going to think the group is associated with the Order of Preachers just because it references St. Dominic’s dog.

i would say it’s okay as long as you were not trying to register the group as a nonprofit or otherwise get a legal right to the name (you might run into legal problems if you did that) and also, if you have any kind of website open to the public, or Facebook page, etc. you might state, “We are NOT affiliated with the Dominican Order”, so as to avoid any accusations of falsely representing yourself as Dominicans.

I might run into legal problems with the Dominican Order you think? Has it happened before?

I have no idea. I’m just saying it’s generally considered legally risky to use marks, logos, mottos, symbols etc associated with another group in a legal context. If you were doing this, presumably you would have a lawyer to advise you. I am simply giving you my opinion here, not legal advice.
