Our daughter is Mary Grace! Hasn’t stopped her from loving the Rosary or the “Hail Mary”!
She never thought we were talking to her or about her.

Now, our 2 year old when asked what his name is will say “Mark David come here” 😃
The OP isnt talking about saying the rosary every so often…but constantly saying Mary.

We are thinking of naming our first child, a daughter(if female!), with the name ‘Mary’. But… their may be issues we want to work through.
Not the frizzing dismay of non-catholic family and acquaintances,
nor the Mary / merry humour…
but the Hail Mary confusion…
My wife and I are in the habit of pealing out a ‘hail Mary’ at the drop of a hat, a hiccup or a blessing. will this pattern confuse our child if we continue it in the presence of our daughter if we’ve also named her “Mary”??
Take it from a man that travels almost constantly, and whose name is Miles, that although I constantly hear my name and sometimes think people are talking about me, it’s not too much trouble. Even if I thought people were talking to me every time they said miles when referring to a sign or something, it wouldn’t be too great a cross to bear. Just do me a favor and don’t do any variations. I prefer Mary over Marie, Maria, Marina, etc. Of course, this is up to you, but I’m just throwing in my vote. 😃

And yes, I have gotten a few Miles Davis jokes, as well as hear people sing the song “He goes miles and miles and miles!” from time to time. 😃

You could give the “Hail, Holy Queen” or the “Memorare” a turn as the prayer you say every few minutes. They are a little longer but still prayers to Mother Mary.

No, the OP is talking about saying the Hail Mary a lot and not wanting to confuse their kid. 🤷 As someone with a daughter named Mary I can answer that hearing “Hail Mary” will not confuse her!

My name is Mary Kathleen and I often go by Mary Kate. You could give her a middle name like Anne, Beth, Pat, Clare, or Jane so she would understand the difference between her and Our Lady.
P.S. Maybe I should have thought my name was God when I was younger. Many a teacher, babysitter, or parent often looked at some act was doing and all they could manage was “oh my God.” 😛
P.P.S. I’m only a teenager and I used to not like my name because it was so plain, now I love it because I see all of the meaning behind. I always say my name is “classic, not plain.” 🙂

I’ve known some Marys, and the only confusion was when there was more than one Mary in a class. None of the girls thought they were being referred to when the Blessed Virgin was being addressed.

It is a short name and already has the diminutive “y” at the end, so it does share the problem with Teri, Sally, and so on that it is full name and nickname rolled into one. Some girls appreciate having a fuller middle name to go with it, instead of another dose of short and sweet. Mary Elizabeth, Mary Kathleen, and Mary Catherine are classics, because you can have the full magnificent form, use a simple “Mary”, or pick up a breezy “Mary Beth” or “Mary Kate”. Girls like options like that.

Mary also has the advantage that nobody can trump you in the patron saint department!

No its not constant. Our reference is usually made to “our Mother Mary”
Thank You so much for All your comments. We will continue to think on it whilst baby-proofing the house!
We’re hoping for a 'Holy Family Birth" : March 19th or 25th! …Or Maybe baptism then!
PS: My dad used to mix me up with the dog when calling it or me. I never heeled well, I guess thats why… 😉
