abbey nullius

(Latin: of no [diocese]) A territory belonging to no diocese, i.e., separated and distinct by proper boundaries from surrounding dioceses. It is ruled by a prelate, who exercises active jurisdiction over the clergy and people living in his territory. In the United States, Belmont Abbey, North Carolina, is an abbey nullius; in Canada, the Abbey of Saint Peter, Muenster; in Australia, New Norcia; in Africa, Lindi.

Yes I am thinking Abbey Nullius would be a very appropriate name for my home but I will keep looking.

I love Sparrowfall, it’s musical, although it’s just a teensy bit sad… poor little birdies… 😦

Please do not use Maranatha. There is a lengthy real-life incident on-line about a woman by that name, submission by women to their fathers, and child courtship/marriage to older men. I do not want to get into details about it on your thread, but if you’d like more info, please write me privately and I can send you some links.

My own home is called FaerieHaven (no space between the words). My prior home was Maplewood. My clan in Virginia has a 40 acre sanctuary… Katwood.
Hi All,

Thankyou so much for your fantastic suggestions - so clever and creative!

My favourite so far is Sparrowfall…beautiful sound, beautiful meaning…just lovely!

We had been thinking about calling our home “Maranatha” after hearing it in a hymn at mass a few weeks ago. It is a Greek word meaning “Our Lord is coming and He will judge those who set Him at nought.” (www.dictionary.com) But I was imagining explaining the meaning to non-Christian visitors and it didn’t seem very welcoming. We don’t want to turn people off and offend them before the’ve even walked in the door! What does everyone think?

Your home sounds so breathtakingly beautiful. If you get a “feminine” feel from your home, as if it were a “she”… you might consider calling her Ancilla Domini – Latin, for “handmaid of the Lord.”

Linked to that thought, perhaps you could find a place in your home to put this meaningful wall decal…

🙂
Our home is 1017 metres above sea level in a beautiful old country village on top of a mountain. It is about 40 years old and has been renovated beautifully (by the previous owners - thankyou Lord!) Our area experiences four distinct seasons and the winters are very cold. (Well cold for our part of the world.)

It has lovely big rooms with high ceilings, polished floorboards and period features like cornices, picture rails, fireplaces. It is nestled in the middle of a very large garden filled with fruit trees (apple, peach, plum) rhododendrens and 32 camellia shrubs.

When I stood in the yard trying to decide if this was the house for us or not, all I could hear was the wind in the trees (and my heart beating loud and fast because I loved it so much!)

This house has truly captured our hearts and we would love to welcome many more children into it in addition to our three blessings and make it a home they will remember with great fondness. It really seems to me to be just asking for a name!

People name their houses?
From what I understand, naming a house is only done in tropical areas, think FL Keys, Hawaii, Bahamas, etc.

I may be wrong, but I believe in areas like this, instead of street addresses, the houses are given names instead, but Ive never heard of this being done outside of tropical areas.

In the lovely book, Karen, written by Marie Killilea, they named their home Sursum Corda. It means “Lift up your hearts.”

Since this thread is over eight years old, I would guess the OP has already named her home and any advice given now is quite pointless.

Well, i just finished watching “Anne of Green Gables” with my kids last night.

It must have been done in Prince Edwards Island in Canada.

DH and I have thought about calling our house “Little Nazareth” to remind us to always be imitating the Holy Family.

In the book “The Sound of Music” (the movie was based on a true story; the book was written by Maria Trapp) Maria and her children named the home where the lived in the U.S. “Cor Unum”, which means “With/Of One Heart”.

Wow, not sure how this popped to the top of my list today, but I’m glad it did. Even though the OP is undoubtedly no longer in need of assistance in the area of house naming, after reading through the helpful suggestions, I would love to continue the discussion.

Has anyone else named their home? What and why?

I myself have not named our home. It’s not the sort of thing that would catch on with my husband, and only one of my five [adult] children would appreciate the effort.
That said, if I were to name a house, I would probably tap the resources of Professor Tolkien’s works. He was a devout Catholic, and his literature is rich with ideas that I think lend themselves to the effort. Rivendell, Edoras, Bag End, to name a few.

Nothing so grand or creative would suit my current home. I live in a modest and rather mundane Larchmont home of some five and half decades, in the heart of suburbia. And, as we are aging too, we speak constantly of when we will move on. I’m sure my children think of it as a haven, though I think of it more as a springboard for them to leap into life, which they have all done. 😃

How about naming it after you favourite shrine e.g Fatima cottage/house/home…Lourdes cottage/house/home…

Also you could name it after your favourite devotion to jesus e.g sacred heart cottage/house/home…

You could name it after your favourite type of prayer e.g Rosary cottage/house/home…

You could name it after the cross e.g…Holy Cross Cottage/house/home

You could name it after a book in the bible e.g Genesis cottage/house/home…Exodus cottage/house/home
