There’s a decent shot that Narnia will outdraw the big ape over Christmas weekend. We won’t know for certain until Tuesday or so, but it will be close.Through Christmas Eve, Narnia has grossed over $163 million inside the U.S. and a total of $242 million worldwide!

According to Boxofficemojo, the estimates are that Kong will outdraw Narnia by 1.4 million for the 4 day weekend. These are industry estimates and are usually accurate.

The more interesting statistics is that it is estimated that Naria only dropped 5.5% from the previous week while Kong dropped 37.3% in the same timeframe.

The differences in box office certainly can be related to the subject matter of Narnia and the books’ big fan base, but Kong would have done much better than it has if it weren’t so long. Jackson couldn’t resist tampering with the simple story line and had to put things in that merely slowed down the plot.

The fact that box office receipts drop off by about a third or so isn’t that big of a deal, I think. When people go to the movies, they usually only see it once unless it’s something really special. The fact that Narnia has dropped by only 5% makes me wonder if it’s developing a repeat business or if its getting strong word of mouth encouraging people who would have waited for the DVD to spend $9 per person to see it in the theater.

I myself haven’t seen it yet. No one I know outside the CA forums has seen it yet, either. Still, someone is going to the theater, right? On the flip side, I know two people who saw “King Kong”. They both liked the movie a lot, but said it needed to be about a half-hour shorter.

I took the kids to see it on Christmas Eve (afternoon). It was very good. The kids loved it. We usually don’t see first run movies.

To take four kids to a matinee (and myself), it was $28! We had popcorn and four small drinks for a total of $50.

We splurged because of Christmas and because we have been looking forward to Narnia all summer and fall.

When it goes to the “dollar cinema,” we will see it a second time.

Only $28 for an adult and four kids at the matinee?! Dang, you got a heck of a deal compared to what I pay around here.

What’s a “dollar cinema”? 😉

It’s a theater that shows movies later than the others in the area, for a cheaper price. A dollar would be great – in Seattle we have $5 shows and think it’s a bargain!
