Nationality/immigrants discrimination

Hi,

What do you think of nationality discrimination towards immigrants? Is it really existing in Western mordern world (such us the UK, USA)??
In this forum I recon there are a majority people who are from english speaking countries and they face a becoming huge wave of immigrants. If I am wrong, pls correct me As an immigrant myself in the UK (I am from former Soviet Union country which independence is celebrated for over 16 years) I face silent and cruel discrimination towards me. I am a Catholic, I believe God created people who may live in the whole planet and the planet belongs to the whole society, but people tend to lable me as a “russian” , which means not just russian, but a lower income person and of course, cheap person. Even though I cannot talk Russian because I speak my mother tounge language, and even though I try to explane that I do not live in Russia, do not speak Russian, they just don’t pay any notice. I really respect Russian people, because they ,as brits and all humans, are sisters and brothers in Jesus, but it is hard to stand up for myself when everybody looks at you as you want to occupy their country! My biggest concern on this issue is that I am afraid of people, that means it is hard or even impossible to love people as Jesus Christ ordered to love…

I didn’t know where to put my thoughts about this, so pls forgive me if I am not on the right track talking about this, but I hope to hear forum readers’ experience and suggestions how to deal with what I am facing now… Thank you!

I have lived abroad, with the intention of staying, but I never suffered any discrimination I was aware of because I was an American living in Western Europe and speaking, as you do, the language.

I think that, if your material welfare is settled, and you are able to worship in a parish you find welcoming, patience is a virtue: native or no, we all count the number of true friends on the fingers of one hand. Be patient to find true friends. Find them at work or at worship, but always be open to true friendship.

What about speaking to a priest or nun or both about your fears? Clearly, you are enterprising or else you would not have found this site and started to use it. Call your rectory to speak with a priest soon, even before you hear from other people on this website, which I am sure will not lack in advise giving.

the history of immigration law in the US is founded almost entirely on national, ethnic and religious discrimination. There were no limits until after WWI when the nation panicked at the large numbers of eastern and southern European immigrants who were seen as a threat because they were non-Aryan and mostly Jewish and Catholic. The initiatives growing out of the progressive movement–settlements, language education, and population control including PP–were sold on the basis of addressing what were seen as social problems: cultural customs based on ethnicity and religion, language, large families, etc.

while I cannot speak about the UK, there are plenty of legal opportunities to immigrate to, or remain in, the United States, and the government will consider humanitarian applications for asylum for the persecuted and even for abused spouses.

these opportunities range from work based, family based, investment based, with the government trying to ensure that people who come here and remain here are not dangerous felons and can contribute and not be a burden on the public fisc, and are not gaming the system.

that said, I do not agree with the OP. governments – exercising the collective will of their populations – have an obligation to their citizens and legal permanent residents to control immigration. the OP has just got to buckle down, bear the burdens that first generation immigrants do everywhere, and become a productive member of society. being an active member of the Church will go a long way.
