wondering if anyone has tried this for mild depression… i dont want to go on the regular medication but i have mood swings due to divorce and want to be stable… does anyone know if this is addicting or else has side effects like weight gain or pregnancy problems or anything else major like that?

Something is telling me that St.John’s Wort can interfere with the birth contol pill…but I’m really not sure. If you can possibly see a doctor of Naturopathic medicine, they can help you out with depression if you want to steer clear of the standard allopathic treatments. If you can’t, your local health food store should be able to give you some info on it.

Also, my two cents (for what it’s worth) is that therapy for depression that is caused by something (like divorce) can be much more beneficial that a pill. Pills (natural and not) are more for depression caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain.

Also, taking higher doses of the B vitamins can really help with stress and mood/energy.

yup that is our trick with our teenage son…extra vitamin B complex…and we really do notice a difference if he does not take them:eek: .

will try taking the Bcomplex then… dont really want to start any anti depressants or anything like that as it would then mean that i would have to wean myself off it.
also, i am not on the pill but i dont want anything to jeopardize future chances to have children and i know that naturopathy does have weird results sometimes…
thanks for the infor… do you know if Bcomplex would help with anxiety as that is what i am having with chest pains

I take St. John’s Wort. It has been a blessing to me. The worse thing that really is more of an annoyance is that SJW can make some people photosensitive. I got a bad sunburn. Other than that, I would recommend it. B complex alos can help. As for the chest pains, don’t ignore that, At least call your doctor and let them know what you are feeling.

If you are taking any other medications, such as MAOI, SSRI, TCA, or several other types of drugs, you should talk with your doctor about the safety of taking this herb.

Kathy is right that St. John’s Wort can increase sensitivity to sunlight.

St. John’s Wort has not been evaluated by the FDA for safety, effectiveness, or purity. All potential risks and/or advantages of St. John’s Wort may not be known.

Do not take St. John’s Wort without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant. It is not known whether St. John’s Wort will be harmful to an unborn baby.

I agree with Kathy on the chest pain issue too. Especially if you have any risk factors such as hypertension, high cholesterol, atherosclerosis, obesity, increased age, that chest pain could be related to the heart not getting enough oxygen (angina). Or, it may just be indigestion. Either way it should be looked into.

I would urge extreme caution before ingesting any OTC “nutritional supplement” as they are not subject to regulation by the FDA, nor any consistent standards regarding testing, purity or effectiveness. They have been the subject of a multitude of manufacturing flaws and/or contamination–not to mention misrepresentation and outright fabrication as to their promised results and benefits.

We have all been made aware of drugs and vaccines, which have been subjected to screening and effectiveness and safety testing required by FDA standards as well as the (name removed by moderator)ut and prescription by a physician, that nonetheless prove to be dangerous, ineffective or even life threatening over time, through interaction with other drugs or health conditions, misuse, etc. How much more of a risk do you take by consuming an untested, unregulated, unprescribed substance?

Well at the rate the FDA is going dont know if I trust them too much;)
As to the claims of certain things…they have been proved elsewhere where they are used (Europe) and have been used for generations!

Notice: After much thought, the moderation and administrative staff has decided not to allow solicitation on the forums of people with specific health concerns and/or medical advice. While well-intentioned, it does create potentially serious problems.

The greatest risk involved with unproven therapeutic modalities is their use to mitigate symptomatology that might otherwise cause the individual to seek out a diagnostician and validate the presence or absence of treatable pathology. In effect, by continuing to allow this thread, we are permitting promotion of a therapeutic regimen which is empirically-based, rather than scientifically-based, and which has its own attendant risks.

It will inevitably garner the opinions, pro or con, of persons who are themselves without any qualifications to comment on its validity, endorsing or damning specific commercial regimens. This is why we don’t allow the mental health threads and why this thread ought not to be out there. Medical advice is precisely what is being solicited and offered by the thread’s very nature.

For these reasons, thank you to all who participated, this thread is now closed. Any future threads of this nature will likewise be removed.

Mane Nobiscum Domine,
Ferdinand Mary
