The priest doing Mass today on EWTN challenged us to read the gospels in a year. I realized that I don’t read my Bible because I get frustrated that I don’t understand what I’m reading sometimes so I am looking for a tool to help me.

In the past I have heard Mother Angelica recommend the Navarre Bible books. I have also seen some commentaries co-written by Scott Hahn called Ignatius Study Bible books.

Do you have one of these? Do you like it? Is there one that is easier to read than the other. I’m not one for flowery language.

Here are the ones I’m debating between

The Navarre study bible is focused on giving you the context in which our Catholic tradition understands each verse of Scripture. You’ll find a lot of references to the Church Fathers and dogmatic theology in its pages. I am not as familiar with the Ignatius study bible, because I don’t have it, but I imagine it would focus on understanding the original intent of the author using modern textual critical methods, but using them in a way that is faithful to Catholic teaching about the inerrancy and unity of the Scriptures. Anybody can correct me if I’m wrong.

I personally use the Douay-Rheims translation, Frist Communion Bible, from Barnes and Noble. It’s well made and inexpensive. The Douay-Rheims translation is the best.

I have both and they are both good. The one I use the most is the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible - New Testament. The ICST-NT tends to give me the information I am looking for concisely, where as with the Navarre you have to dig through the extensive commentaries and Catholic teachings to glean the info you are looking for. Now I have the 10 volume hardback Navarre series, there is a one volume Navarre New Testament that might be a little more concise. The ten volume Navarre series has excellent and extensive introductions to each of the books of the Bible, it is worth it for that alone. 👍

The easy answer! Get both they are both well worth it.

I have both; but if I had to choose only one, it would be the Navarre.
(I have the multi volume Navarre NT set. I’m not sure if I would like a condensed single volume version.)

Get both? How do people do that? Assuming a paycheck of $300 a week, and subtracting living expenses, it would take like 50 paychecks just to get all ten volumes of the Navarre Bible. That’s almost a year, and it requires a lot of dedication.

I have the Navaree NT in the one volume expanded edition which I think is very much the same as the separate volumes. I love it and what I love most about it is that it is an uncompromising commentary from the Catholic perspective. Unlike the Ignatius commentary which is great for apologetics the navaree to me is there for one reason only and that is to deepen and strengthen ones Catholic faith.

I have nearly all of the Navarre series, and all of the Ignatius.

Actually, I have the Ignatius in multiple versions: hard copy individual books, hard copy NT, all the released OT kindle versions, and the NT in kindle format.

The reason? They were’nt available in kindle format originally!

Why in heaven’s name isn’t the Navarre series coming out for the kindle?

My wife highly discourages me from buying any more books. All the shelves are full, and they’re taking up too much space!

I suppose that’s a “good problem” to have.

Anyway, I actually prefer the Navarre, slightly, since thy have more information in them. But the Ignatius series is also great.

I bought the 10 volume Navarre series over a period of 14 months. If you can only buy one, I would get ‘The Gospels and Acts’ or the one volume NT.

Either would make a nice Christmas gift TO you!

BOTH

And also the Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture

All THREE dove tail together and are different (different approaches and sources etc) but complimentary.
