Then what is reason for airing the programs?
**NBC Broadcaster Slashes God from “Veggie Tales” Programming
**By Gudrun Schultz
NEW YORK, New York, September 21, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The US National Broadcasting Corporation has agreed to run the enormously popular children’s cartoon “Veggie Tales,” which features moral and religious storylines centered on biblical themes, but the broadcaster is demanding that all mention of God be slashed from the shows before they can be aired.
NBC keeps shooting themselves in the foot.

I was wondering about that! I was surprised NBC would air it in the first place. I knew there had to be a catch!
Those veggies weird me out anyways. I saw one where this broccoli was a chef, and he was eating something. I am sure it wasn’t meat, but what does that make him for eating other vegtables?!? 😉

This is very unfortunate and hypocritical. I don’t have a problem with NBC showing Maddonna on a crucifix, the cross, as much as it is a Christian symbol, is also a cultural symbol, and means different things to different people. However, it baffles me that they allow of freedom of expression in that regard, but then demand that references of God be removed from Veggie Tales. How many television shows on their network will take liberties with the phrase “O my God!”. Should that be edited too? We live in a society that is so concerned with rooting out the negative use of religion that it seems to be trying to eliminate it all togather, to the expense of millions of the faithfull who adhere to their faith to the good of all.

What is the Catholic perspective on Veggie Tales, btw? My son is 3 and that seems to be a good age for watching it–just wondering if it has any slant toward any particular denomination.

Is it kosher?

(Heh, sorry, could not resist the bad pun…:o )

Surely if you slashed God from Veggie Tales there wouldn’t be anything left. It’s an overtly Christian show. What do they expect it will be about?

We will be at the stage soon where, due to not being allowed to potentially cause offence to anyone, we won’t be able to show anything.

It works the other way too. People wanted reference to God taken out of the movie version of His Dark Materials. (screams) Doing that would remove the meaning behind the story and then the story wouldn’t actually make sense. Of course I don’t agree with Pullman about God but removing such things from his work in case it offends someone is dreadful.

Some supermarkets in the UK stopped selling “hot cross buns” in case they offended Muslims! Muslims responded by saying they weren’t offended by buns.

Where will it end?

no station shows Veggie Tales in any form in the UK :crying:

We have all of the veggie tales videos. They refer (so far) to the OT and not the NT. Provide good moral teaching and I have see nothing in them that is anti-Catholic.

As for NBC they now are going to be on my blocked list. When they can insult religion, allow the name of God to be used profanity and then insist on removing the name of God used properly they loose my viewing.

so madonna has the right to free expression, but Larry Boy does not. what a world, what a world. in our program the kinder kids love VT, but the biggest fans for some reason are 7th graders.

You can’t say “God” on t.v. unless you include the words “damn it”.

Absolutely. And the only mention of Jesus Christ is when His name is used as a curse.

Sad, sad state of affairs.

'thann (who yearns for the days when even the mildest epithets were banned from the air waves!)

My son loved them and still loves them. I have watched most of them and have not found anything objectionable in them. As some one else stated, they are OT not NT. There is a Bible story, a real life story and a Bible quote. They do use NIV for the quote.

I love, “God is bigger than the boogy man.”

Hello, I’ve been discussing this with friends via email, just thought I’d jump in here.

I love the Veggies, my name was my son’s idea, lol! We most likely won’t be watching it if it does come out, we have several videos, and don’t watch much tv anyway. I might if they leave it alone, and let Bob and the others praise God like they do in the videos. You take God out and you have a bunch of veggies just running around.

Great idea, Jennifer! I am sorely disappointed that Big Idea would allow the hacked up version on tv, instead of sticking to the original.

Interesting article from the NYT, NBC has no problem allowing blatant attacks on Christianity in the name of “art”, but doesn’t want to allow the mere mention of God’s name in a children’s program. Unless it was taken in vain, I’m sure.

ARRGH! I just sent my well-worded comment then after I clicked “submit reply” I got told the forum was shut-down for maintenance for 15 minutes. My previous comment was apparent lost. Offer it up, offer it up, offer it up…🙂

So here it is again:
We’ve watched Veggie Tales for years and still come out singing the song or quoting from them.

One thing that puzzles me about the NBC issue: Years ago, when Veggie Tales was first getting hot, the Detroit Free Press (a very liberal newspaper so I was surprised to see such large and positive article) wrote about it. At the time, I recall being impressed because the creators had said they had turned down a major distribution or broadcast deal (sorry, I don’t remember the specifics) because they had been told they would need to tone down the “God stuff” and just create “life lesson” shows. I wonder what happened to change their minds after all these years.

As to any possible anti-Catholicism, I only recall two very, very, very minor instances that might actually be nothing at all but I’ve wondered about. Both would probably go right over the heads of most kids and adults. The first was a “commercial” about something called a “Forgive-O-Matic” which always seemed to me to be a subtle dig against Confession.
The other, which was really, really minor was at the end of Rack, Shack and Benny. The big evil chocolate factory turns out to be shaped like a Cathedral. What’s up with that? Again, probably nothing at all, but I’ve always wondered.

We love Veggie Tales and our (extremely) orthodox parish shows them for Movie Nights.

Have you ever seen the segment on St. Patrick? We were rolling at that one. Eventhough we are Irish, we still will be prone to saying “Happy Pig Boy Day” on March 17th.

As another poster stated, any Catholic slamming would go over the kids heads. If it’s there, it’s very subtle. What I am sad about is that when one watches the older Veggies, they are actual Bible stories. Now the focus is morality and they are not the same.

But don’t get me started singing Barbara Manatee…

Oh now see, I spoke too soon.

This is from the Big Idea website…
“We proudly continue to serve the Christian community in many ways, including hundreds of books published, a 52-week Sunday School curriculum, our soon-to-be-released Bible storybook, and a continuing Vacation Bible School program. This November, Gideon: Tuba Warrior, a VeggieTales adventure based on the legendary biblical story of Gideon, releases on DVD. Please know our commitment to introducing kids to God continues.”
