Nealing and praying before pictures

Last summer a picture was published in out local Catholic newspaper. IT has bothered me ever since. The picture showed a lot of different teens kneeling and praying with pictures of different saints, candles and beads- could have been rosarys- infront of them. I saw this and I immediately thought of idols. Was this OK. I am a non-catholic and I was taught that this was wrong.
