Near occasion of sin and friends

I’ve heard that people can be an occasion of sin, so I have a bit of a predicament.

I have a group of friend who I’ve known for a long time, but they do have a tendency to make impure jokes and this often leads me to have lustful and impure thoughts. I try to change the conversation, but it often leads back to impurity.

I ask this now because tonight I have Dead Theologians Society (more catechism-based youth group) that these friends go to it. I really like “DTS” and always feel zealous for the faith after attending (plus its really fun), but now I’m worried that going would be a mortal sin because of the near occasion of sin.

Help is greatly appreciated.
 
Shoot! DTS was really helping me. This will be hard to exlplain to my friends and parents.

Go to DTS. Don’t let these guys spoil it for you. Hang around with some different people tonight. If the old friends start with the bad jokes, just tell them how immature that is and that you don’t want to hear it.
 
Thankyou for asking this question. You are obviously doing your best with a difficult issue.

First off, I can’t see this as a mortal sin, as you are attending the DTS for very good reasons, and the occasion of sin is an unwilled side effect. Still, the only way that you will be sure is to ask your confessor.

It seems to me that the Dead Theologians Society is a good thing in itself, and an important part of your life, spiritually and socially, so you want to find some way of keeping it, rather than losing it because of the unfortunate behaviour of some others, which you have not encouraged or assented to.

As your friends are making impure and inappropriate jokes at a Christian meeting, then I think you have a right to remind them, tactfully, that this behaviour is contrary to the purpose of the meeting, and undermines it.

So, I am suggesting that rather than defending your own purity, you try to defend the purity of the meeting. Your friends might even be thankful for the reminder.

Does the DTS have a supervisor, or priest, who you can ask to make the comment for you?
