Incorrect.

The words needed for a Valid absolution are “I absolve you from your Sins in the name of the Father and the Son and The Holy Ghost”. If these are omitted, the Sacrament is invalid.

A *declaratory *formula would be illicit in the Roman Rite - it would however be *valid *; so “you are absolved, etc…” would be valid.

God forgives our Sins through the sacrament - however it is the Priest who grants the absolution.

Thank You.

At my last confession, it sounded like the priest said "…?
don’t get in the dangerous habit of second guessing your confession, the priest often says the words to himself while you are making your act of contrition, and here some priests even if they hear your confession in English will say the absolution in Spanish, one priest does it in Latin. Assume that you did not hear properly, and go in peace.

Some months back, I had an issue with a confession outside of my home church where the Priest who was in a hurry, simply asked me if I was sorry for all my sins, that he didn’t have to hear them… I was very taken aback by this, let me tell you!

When I got back to my home parish, I asked my Pastor about this next time I went to Confession, and he used a Latin phrase (silly brain, can’t think what it was?) that means that if the Priest is lacking, the Church itself makes up for… just don’t go to that particular Priest again for a confession!!

I was quite relieved that I didn’t have to do the entire confession again in its entirety, and I believe in this case, God arranged for there to have been a deficiency in that first Priest to spare me having to say those sins outloud, anyhow. I think Mother Church is wonderful that there are such dispensations available for all that is lacking in our human nature, that She supplies it through the Eternal Merits of Jesus’ Blood.

Was it ecclesia supplet? That means the Church supplies what is lacking. I hope I have correct spelling here.

Hi Betsy,

That sounds real familiar, yep. Something with the supply in Latin 🙂 Thanks so much! Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones.
