I’ve developed a relationship with a Protestant guy I see at work on a limited basis. He strikes me as an honest, open-hearted guy who is really seeking God. He shared with me yesterday about a book he is reading which is all about how we find in Scripture what we want to find. As he talked I was reminded of my own sense, as a Protestant, that Truth was so elusive. I’m praying about how to introduce the idea of Tradition, the Church to this guy w/o shutting him down. Can anybody recommend a book or an audio lecture which will be a gentle/non-combative exploration from a Catholic perspective of what this guy is wrestling with, i.e. how to find Truth in the Protestant world? Thanks!

How about something about Cardinal John Henry Newman (soon to be beatified)? He was a Protestant who set out to write a thesis on how the development of doctrine was erroneous and ending up converting to Catholicism. Avery Cardinal Dulles has written a good book on him which shows how he set out to challenge Catholic beliefs and ended up having to admit that the Catholic Church is the one true Church of Christ!

I forgot to mention that I need something on the popular level. I think Newman would be way too much for this guy.

Aside from the Catholic.com radio programs which we love in our home (so many topics to choose from), I would recommend going to LighthouseCatholicMedia.com for hour-long talks. In particular, anything by Matt Kelly, Steve Ray, Tim Staples, or Scott Hahn - the conversion stories of the latter 3 are great listens and filled with scriptural content that should satisfy a protestant. The CDs can be purchsed for about $3 or downloaded for $2.

Books by Protestant converts might be helpful. They tend to address the issues that would resonate with your friend. I found all three of the following very readable:

  1. *]By What Authority? An Evangelical Discovers Catholic Tradition - Mark P. Shea

*]Born Fundamentalist, Born Again Catholic - David B Currie

*]Crossing the Tiber - Evangelical Protestants Discover the Historical Church - Stephen K. Ray

I like Patrick Madrid’s Surprised by Truth books, particularly book #2. Books of conversion stories may seem fairly bold on the surface, but I think they also very gently answer questions he may not even realize he has.

Your friend is lucky to have you as a friend!

Kathy
