I have a friend who grew up agnostic, got involved in an evangelical church in High School only to fade from it. He now is in prison and is turning to God again. I want to use this as an opportunity to introduce him to the truth of the Catholic church. I can send him books via an online retailer and wondered what would be the best book for him. One that is not too “scholarlly” would be best.

Thanks,
w

The Life of Chrst by Fulton J. Scheen

Is a filled with Irish wit, humor and still profoundly Orthodox and beautifully written.

Love and prayers to you both!

Second Sheen’s Life of Chist. His “World’s First Love” is a fantastic book about Mary.

Strobel’s “The Case for Christ” is not a Catholic book, but, is a good apologetic for Christianity - same goes for C.S. Lewis “Mere Christianity”.

I’d highly reccomend George Weigel’s “The Truth of Catholicism”.

Google Books is great for reading bits of a book before you buy 🙂 books.google.com/books?id=8OTxwavq-NYC&dq=the+truth+of+catholicism&printsec=frontcover&source=bl&ots=aKueIoEZy_&sig=xjN56CsNPM5cAg8kCHX489lbpYk

Sheed’s “To Know Christ Jesus” is very good.

One more - testimonies are fantastic!

The Surprised By Truth books, easy to read, great stories.

I am a huge fan of Home Sweet Rome by Scott and Kimberly Hahn (which brought me back into the Church in the few hours it took for me to read it!). Exciting, easy to read, and *filled *with explanations of Catholic theology through the eyes of a Protestant minister who converted as a result.

I recommend it to Catholics who do not know the basics of their faith as well.

I prefer Mere Christianity to Bishop Sheen for beginners, because I have found that sometimes Sheen’s writing is more old-fashioned, altho naturally I think Sheen is fantastic also! OTOH, Lewis remained Anglican all his life 😦

Your friend might find Kolbe: Saint of the Immaculate interesting. Saint Kolbe spent time in prison at Auschwitz during WW II.
