My brother is agnostic and he has a jaded view point of the church because he was a victim of sexual abuse by a priest when he was a young altar server about 40 years ago. When I found out earlier this year, I was very upset and even drawn away from the church myself for a time. My hardest stumbling block was that the church seemed to protect these criminals who should have been locked up. I have managed to overcome my own doubts of the church and realize that no person, not even a church leader, is infallible. But now I am hoping to plant the seed of my faith in my brother’s heart. He has been through a lot of suffering as a result of his victimization as a child, including anger, addiction, and depression. I sought out help for him and found the victims assistance line associated with my diocese. I called and then visited with the therapist. And by her urging I had my brother also go and see her. It has been several months and he is going through therapy which he claims has helped him to put his past behind him and has also reduced his anger and depression. Every bit of this therapy has been funded by the church. And rightly so. For all of the help I am thankful.
Now I am worried about his salvation. In a discussion with him yesterday he said “why would God if he were good send his son here to be killed and then leave us alone to follow him blindly with no more proof or evidence of his existence?” I answered that Christ instituted the church for that reason. Then he said “Christians believe that Satan introduced evil to the world, but really he only introduced knowledge. God wants us to be blind dummies following him around and not even knowing why when in reality there is no God. If there were and he made me the way that I am, and the way that I am causes me to go to hell, then **** him.” Pardon the cussing. He asked me to please read a book by Nietzsche called Antichrist which explains why Christianity is bogus. I agreed on the condition that he read a book of my choosing. He says as long as it’s not something stupid like chicken soup for the soul.
So now I have to figure out what book to give him. I will read it first. My hope is that someone will help guide me to a book written by a former agnostic or atheist. It would be great if it could even be a fellow victim of sexual abuse by a priest. Although I know that’s a lot to ask. Can anyone please help? Thank you in advance.
