Can anyone recommend a very good Catholic Bible commentary? Online is preferable, of course. I’ve been accessing the Haydock’s NT Commentary, but it is incomplete and the transcriber admits to a limited knowledge of English.

Any recommendations will be most appreciated. 🙂

Can’t help with internet stuff. If you looking just for general commentaries, I use the following:
  • The New Jerome Biblical Commentary
  • The Collegeville Biblical Commentary (Old Test & New Test)
  • The Writings of the New Testament by Luke Timothy Johnson (good general overview)
  • The New Interpreter’s Bible (Vol ??? depending on what you search…generally excellent but some protestant thought here and there to be aware of)
These are helpful along with specific commentaries on individual books. I usually cross link with several when doing exgetical work. Sorry I am not great with the use of computer’s to help you with online commentaries…be careful to find Catholic ones!

Love & Peace,
Bob

A transcriber’s worth is in the accuracy of his transcription, not in his fluency in the language being transcribed. Although the latter would be a definite aid in spotting typos.😉

The transcriber in question is a product of American public education, a native English speaker with a college degree, whose knowledge of English, when compared to the brilliance of the original writers being transcribed, can only be called limited.

As far as being incomplete, at this moment about 80% of the New Testament commentary is online, with work added on an almost daily basis. The entire New Testament is expected to be online by September 2005. Anyone interest can check out this version of Haydock’s Catholic Commentary on the New Testament, here.

Links to a few other online Catholic Commentaries can be found on the website’s Favorite Links page.

Bob – thanks!

Todd – so, if I understand correctly, you’re saying Haydock’s is still a very good commentary to use? I certainly hope that is the case, because it is such an easy resource to access.

Thanks,

Mary

Haydock’s commentary was originally published before the American Civil War. It’s commentary is good and solidly Catholic but, because it is over 150 years old, it has some limitations.

Catholic Answers apologists often recommend the Navarre Bible, a modern multi-volume Catholic Bible commentary, published by Scepter Publishers. Commentaries on all of the New Testament books are available and commentaries on most of the Old Testament books are available.

Another modern multi-volume Catholic Bible commentary that is recommended is the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible, published by Ignatius Press. Commentaries on many of the New Testament books are available.

An single-volume commentary that Catholic Answers apologists often recommend is the 1953 edition of A Catholic Commentary on Holy Scripture, edited by Dom Bernard Orchard, published by Thomas Nelson & Sons. Although out of print it, can often be found at used bookstores, such as www.abebooks.com, or at auctions, such as www.ebay.com .

I was recently able to get a copy on Ebay for less than $20. However, they often go for around $80. Ebay has a search feature that will notify you by email when an item comes up for auction. It was this feature that helped me.

I have personally never used the Navarre Bible, but have heard excellent things about it. I have used some of the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible books and have found them OK when used with other sources, but lacking in themselves for detailed work. I will need to find myself a copy of A Catholic Commentary on Holy Scripture, even though there has been a great advancement in biblical understanding and knowledge since 1953, it may have useful insights along more recent biblical studies.

Trailblazer,

The Navarre commentaries are excellent. I have most of the ones you mentioned above, but those “older ones” are great. I would stongly recommend the Haydock commentary as well as A Catholic Commentary on Holy Scripture.

Although advances in biblical scholarship has occured, it is interesting to see how some commentaries have changed outlooks. For instance, if you were to look at a Navarre commentary, and a CCHS for Gen 38 and the story of Onan, you will see one side. Read the NJBC, and you will get quite another.

Peace,

MilesJesu

Is there any such document that carries with it greater authority of interpretation of Scripture? Or perhaps a Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur?

I very much want to make certain I have a correct interpretation!

The New Jarome Biblical Commentary, The Collegeville Bible Commentary, Ignatius Catholic Study Bible has the Imprimatur and Nihil Obstat – reassuring us that these books are free from doctrinal or moral error.
Love & Peace,
Bob

Fantastic! Thanks so much, Bob. :tiphat:

Just be carefull (like in vary wary) of “modern scripture scholars”, and especially the late Fr Raymond Brown.
