I’m in a debate with a fellow Facebooker about this gay marriage thing. Can anyone give me a passage or direct me to a link in the Catechism that talks to the subject of “Hate the sin, love the sinner.”?

Thanks.

The phrase “Hate the sin but love the sinner” appears to have originated with St. Augustine, link.

The “hate the sin but love the sinner” philosophy can be found in the Church’s teaching on homosexuality in paragraphs 2357-2359 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, where it describes homosexual acts as “acts of grave depravity” and “intrinsically disordered” and “contrary to natural law” and that “nder no circumstances can they be approved” but it goes on to say that “men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies . . . must be accepted with respect, compassion and sensitivity” and “every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided.”

Thanks.

On a related note, I am often confronted with the “argument” that “nowhere in the Bible did Jesus (specifically Jesus, that is) say homosexuality is wrong.” A lot of people seem to have this notion that if Jesus didn’t specifically speak against it then it must be OK.

What is a good counter-argument to this?
