We have a finished hardwood floor in the living room, with an area rug. The floor is bare at the entrance to the room. My son, in an attempt to be helpful, sprayed the exposed floor with a Pledge-like spray wax. It is now lethally slippery. I’ve tried washing it with Murphy’s Oil Soap, a spray cleaner, and ammonia & water solution, but to no avail. It remains slippery. (very clean now, but slippery.)
Does anyone know what else I can do?

The furniture polish company may have an 800 number you can call. You’re not the first person to have this problem.

Oh my this is so funny. We did the same thing to our kitchen floor and my 4 year old feel too many times to count. We worked thru it and it finally is “safe” to walk on, but I don’t know what to tell you, we couldn’t figure out what to do. It took about two weeks to work the dirt back into the floor so it wasn’t so slippery.

This exact thing happened with our living room floor! You know what works really well? Dilute one can of Coke with an equal amount of water, spread, and let dry. It takes the slipperiness away without harming the finish. Also it leaves no stickiness. 👍

What a unique idea. All I could think of was to use something like a dish soap (Palmolive, Joy, Dawn). One of the ones that is really good at cutting grease might also be good at “cutting” the wax that was used in the first place. This though will ruin the finish on the floor.

I don’t have any wood floors, just stone and tile and carpeting so we don’t generally have to deal with the “slippery” floor thing.

Hope you get that slippery floor fixed but in the meantime, practice skating on it in your stocking feet 👋

Try using Lysol or Mr. Clean or something that “strips” floor wax… Or try using something with a mild abrasive, like Comet or a nylon pad–but very lightly. You might also put down a throw rug that has a plastic grippy backing.

We had the exact same thing happen to us. I was dusting the buffet in our living room and the pledge got all over the hard wood floor. We had numerous slips that day until I got out our Swiffer Wet Jet and ran it over it a few times with a few sprays. The Swiffer Wet Jet is safe on wood floors and I use it all around the house. Cleared up the slipperies really well. Good luck.

Thanks, everyone. These suggestions look very interesting & helpful.

Thank goodness my kiddos aren’t at your house. They would be slipping and sliding for hours!

What about baking soda and water? Baking soda works wonders for everything else. 😉

I did the same thing at DD’s new house, trying to help out. The spray polish was stored with the dustmop and broom etc., so I thought that’s what she used. Talk about a deathtrap, the baby almost slid clear across the hall and out the door. sprinkled the area with baby powder, let it sit a while, and wiped it up with paper towel, then cleaned the floor with the Hoover floor machine (which was in the garage, so I never saw it). fortunately, no permanent damage to floor or kids.
