Hello, new here!

I have recently had a re-birth in the catholic faith and after ~20 years and have found God.

I have come to the realization that I need to quit using my Vape (Juul). I have a history of anxiety and depression, so I have decided to quit smoking gradually by counting every hit I take, and lowering it every week. I tried cold turkey, and those two days were a torment of anxiety. Since we are taught not to seek out crosses (in this case put myself through that torment), I decided against going cold Turkey.

Even though I am constantly lowering my intake, very time I take a hit, I still feel terrible that God is disappointed and I am mortally sinning. Do you think that God understand this process, and is happy that I am cutting down, with the intent to quit?

Thank you and God bless all of you.

Okay, sorry to be cheeky, but my advice is: don’t smoke! Seriously, you have to want to quit. Believe me, I know how hard it is to get over an addiction, but by the grace of God, you can do it

I managed to quit smoking a few years ago, back in the days of real cigarettes. I told myself I didn’t have to stop completely, I was just cutting down. I allowed myself to smoke on one day in each year, and on that day I could smoke as many cigarettes as I liked. The day I picked was February 29.

Yes, God understands. He understands all.

Whichever way will work for you is the best. People have found many different ways to quit the use of nicotine in its various forms. Wean yourself off at the pace you can maintain.

Do not be disappointed or despair if you fall off the wagon, so to speak, many do. Start again with the same commitment. It can take more than one attempt.

If anxiety and stress are a real and major problem, talk to your doctor or perhaps a state or local health agency has a “quite line” you can call for additional support.

Find activities and prayer to expend time and physical energy on.

Thank you for your words. I have spoken with my doctor, and he agreed that it is a good idea to slowly wean myself off over the next few months. God bless you

I hear you. I spoke with my doctor and he agreed it is an “excellent idea” to wean myself off over the course of a few months. I might try to just stop before then.

Thank you for your kind words. Who knows, you might even want to try that trick yourself! Just a postscript: I clearly remember the time and place that I smoked my last cigarette. My wife and I were with a group of friends in what was our favorite restaurant at the time. The date was February 29, 2004.
