Hello everyone!I just have a quick question, but it’s been bothering me for a while.
Section 9 of Inter Mirifica states that “All who, of their own free choice, make use of these media of communications as readers, viewers or listeners have special obligations. For a proper choice demands that they fully favor those presentations that are outstanding for their moral goodness, their knowledge and their artistic or technical merit. They ought, however, to void those that may be a cause or occasion of spiritual harm to themselves, or that can lead others into danger through base example, or that hinder desirable presentations and promote those that are evil.”
This might sound like a nitpicky worry, but there’s a show that I really like, and I’m worried that it’s a sin to watch it. The show itself has no objectionable content and many solid moral messages-- but in one episode, there’s a one-off side character that is played by a famous contestant on RuPaul’s Drag Race. Now, I don’t have a problem with that specifically, but the context where the character appears is as a judge for a fashion show the main characters have to compete in-- while the main characters don’t perform in drag (although there is a joke where a deer performs a more traditional drag routine, which is funny but not too problematic in my eyes because it’s clearly meant to be humorous), the scene as a whole could be seen as a reference to drag culture and to RuPaul’s Drag Race specifically. It’s a family show, and I watched it with my little sister and she found the scene humorous (she obviously has no idea what drag even is).
Would this count as the show “promoting evil presentations” under the guidelines of Inter Mirifica, and should I stop watching and enjoying the show?
