Hi there,

Can anyone recommend a book on how to live in the kingdom of God or live like the saints

I truly believe if I could detach from earthly attachements ie reputation, material possessions etc I could be much happier

But when I get out in society and that is all people talk about, it becomes hard

Dear Andrea_Canada,

You are not alone! God’s Word in 1Jn 2 :15 tells all of us:
“Do not love the world…”
God created the world and His creation is beautiful but our disordered self-love is a consequence of the original sin. Those of us who’ve been baptized and given a share in God’s Divine life still struggle daily to live as you wrote: “… in the kingdom of God or live like the saints”.

There are many books written by saints but I would like to suggest a book written by a layman who has read many of our Saints and classical Spiritual Writers and by God’s grace wanted to write something for the Church. Here is a link to his book:

The Ordinary Path to Holiness

I’ve read it more than once and I know others who have also been so blessed by it, one of them said it changed her life! Perhaps the most beautiful recommendation came from Fr. Benedict Groeschel, CFR who wrote in his Introduction to this book:
This is one of those rare books that is to be lived as well as read. But read it with your soul as well as your mind and with your heart as well as your eyes.
I hope you will read it and be blessed. Take your time and ponder slowly.

Just read about the saints

Perhaps you’d find inspiration in “The Story of a Soul,” by Therese of Lisieux.

Prayer is of course the key to spiritual growth.

The Interior Castle by Saint Teresa of Avila (Catholic)
The Way of the DIsciple by Erasmo Leiva-Merikakis (Trappist Monk)
The Mystical Theology of the Eastern Church by Vladimir Lossky (Orthodox Theologian)

There are several books about living an oblate life or other third orders. Id recommend those even if you don’t want a formal association with a particular monastery or order.

Two examples I like and have benefited from:

How to Be a Monastic and Not Leave Your Day Job

A Place Apart: Monastic Prayer and Practice for Everyone

Fr. Jacques Philippe’s books are excellent guides to living a deeply devout life while “in the world.”
