Hello All,
Do you know a book by a Catholic Saint on redemptive suffering & the Protestant view of free-will and total depravity?

Dom Hubert van Zeller wrote extensively on suffering. He was severely ill for a large portion of his life. Anything from him is excellent on the subject. He doesn’t speak of the Protestant viewpoint, but he approaches the topic on the basis of spirituality.

“With God In Russia” is another beautiful book about joy in suffering.

On this topic but in a novel format, ie a fictional story set during the start of the reformation so includes a fair amount of contrasting Protestant and Catholic viewpoints but presented as part of the story by the main character. The book is called The mass of Brother Michel by Michael Kent.
It’s not in your criteria by being a saint though but it makes for easy reading and a easy way to understand what you ask. It’s also written in a truly beautiful way about suffering.

Hmm… I found that being forced to read “Moby Dick” in college to be a source of redemptive suffering for me… that wouldn’t count, would it?

(I keep meaning to read St Teresa of Calcutta’s book, myself – although it’s not a thesis on redemptive suffering, it certainly is an account of one experience of it!)

Look into The Seven Storey Mountain written by Thomas Merton in 1948. It has been compared to the confessions of St. Augustine. You can find it on line. This was one of my Mother’s favorites but I never got around to reading it. It does deal with the Protestant faith in that the author converted to Catholicism. He speaks of his struggles in doing so and eventually also becoming a Trappist monk. Not sure if this is what you are looking for but thanks for the question. I might have to pick up a copy for myself.

Going back to comment on this.

“Protestant” covers a wide range, from Charismatics to Holiness Pentecostals, from high Church Lutherans to the worship center in a strip mall. There is no one speaker/author for all Protestant teachings, because there is not a united set of Protestant teachings.

If you google “scholarly works on total depravity Christian”, you will find much reading materials.

You might want to begin with reading over in non-Catholic Religions area the numerous threads on the topic.
