A friend I met online is trying to get information on NFP. She is 19 yrs old and married. They have a 11 month old and she about 4 weeks from giving birth to her second. She is not Catholic. When she was younger her doctor had her on BC to help regulate her periods, but she had a very bad reaction. So she already knows that it isn’t an option for her, but the fear of getting pregnant after giving birth this time is really starting to get to her. I tried to talk to her about NFP, but I have no experience with it so I couldn’t help much. I tried to look through some posts here to see if I could find a site that would give her more information. Most sites either are very general, are trying to sell the info, or just say to find an instructor. She said she might be willing to go to an instructor, but she wanted to get some more information first. Does anyone have more information and/or a free site she can take a look at?

She can purchase the book The Art of Natural Family Planning online from Amazon. It’s a great book. The book Taking Charge of Your Fertility is also excellent and available through a bookstore (although that book teaches FAM, which is different from NFP in that you use a barrier contraceptive during the fertile time if you want to).

The website www.omsoul.com has brochures on NFP that are general in nature but give the idea about it. The CCLI website at www.ccli.org has comprehensive information on the Sympto-Thermal Method of NFP. It also has information on how to contact an instructor. An instructor can talk to her on the phone and give her an overview of what NFP is and how it works.

I really don’t know what you mean by the sites are trying to sell the info-- of course they have to pay for any materials they produce so you would have to buy a book or whatever. Some of OMSoul’s stuff can be downloaded free-- you can go to the “download” section of their website. Don’t recall offhand if they have NFP stuff in that section.

The basics of NFP are that you monitor your signs of fertility. Every woman has these signs-- they are basal body temp at waking, cervical mucus, and cervical position. By monitoring these signs, and recording them on a chart, you can know if you are fertile or not.

A great resource is the Delphi Forum NFPTalk. That is a community of women who use NFP, and they are always happy to answer questions of newcomers and those who want info on NFP. You or she can post questions on their board.

Fletcher Doyle, a devout Catholic newsreporter here where I live has written a book on NFP which will be released in March 2006.

It’s called NFP Blessed Our Marriage: 19 True Stories. He interviewed couples from all walks of like including myself (I have a serious illness) to show how NFP works and how it strengthens marriage.

You can get it at amazon.com.

Hope this helps.

There is a basic introduction to fertility signs if you simply buy a basal thermometer. The one I got at Eckerd is identical to the one CCL provides in its packet.

fertilityfriend.com/

I’m not sure if this is the site I used (I taught myself fertility awareness as part of an essay I did for school and then found it was great for practicing chastity – no romantic movies when I’m ovulating or impure thoughts pop up). It teaches you how to be aware, but it is for people who are trying to get pregnant, but it still helps you chart.

Thanks everybody. I gave her the link to this site so she can check it out. I took a quick glance at the sites myself so maybe one day it they will come in handy for myself also. Thanks again.
