A friend and fellow Lay Carmelite called to ask if it would be all right for her to attend an Evangelical Bible study offered through a group that is helping her and her husband with their finances. I told her no and offered to find a good Catholic Bible study for her online. I found this: The Crossroads Initiative with Dr. Marcellino D’Ambrosio. It looks all right, but is it? And are there others you folks can recommend?

Dr. Ambrosio is an orthodox and reliable resource. However this site doesn’t look like an actual Bible study, but rather a site with a lot of resources to help you study the Bible from a Catholic perspective. Nothing wrong with that, but I’m thinking it may not be what your friend is looking for.

If she is looking for something entirely self-contained and on-line, there’s pretty slim pickings from a Catholic perspective. There are a few sites that offer meditations like Dr. Ambrosio seems to be offering, but not much in the way of systematic studies.

I’d either steer her toward Scott Hahn’s Bible Study Website, or Catholic Scripture study over at Catholic Exchange (the latter now requires a subscription, I believe). You can find links to both of these (and other) sites at my Catholic Scripture Study web page, linked below, where I also offer a modest weekly Bible study, updated every Wednesday (give or take a day).

A couple sites have come to my attention, but I cannot comment on how well they may help you:
  1. Supposed to have online material for individual or group study
    catholicscripturestudyinc.org/
  2. Another site
    catholicbiblestudy.com/
  3. Browse around the site that Scott Hahn works on
    salvationhistory.com/
At Hahn’s site, I have found some excellent books suggestions. Path to Freedom by Fr. Jean Corbon (around $10 at Amazon) made quite an impression on me. I read this book a few pages at at time like a meditation. This is high flying spiritual exegesis, not crawling around with historical-critical distractions.

I’m just getting into Fr. Damasus Winzen’s guide to scripture (don’t recall the title) and this has started out well. He makes the interesting observation how God’s Word has been expressed.
God’s word has been expressed in creation (let there be light, etc.)
God’s word has been expressed in scripture (the covenant has been made and laid down in writing for all to see God’s faithfulness).
God’s word has been expressed in Jesus Christ (the Word was made flesh - John’s gospel).

It seems only fitting to extend this, God’s Word has been given to all ages by the institution of the Eucharist (this is my body, this is my blood). I would say this is also an amazing expression of God’s Word.

“Pathways In Scripture”: Excellent book. 👍

Thanks, everyone! Because of your great suggestions, I think I’ve now got what I need to get her started. Thanks again! 😃
