okay i have a question that i need help to answer to one of my friends…she asked why do we pray to the dead? and arent the saints dead? how do you know they are in heaven??

i am still in RCIA and i am still learning. i know the answer but i am having a really hard time finding the words to say it to where she understands it.

The Church is both visible and spiritual, a hierarchical society and the Mystical Body of Christ. She is one, yet formed of two components, human and divine. That is her mystery, which only faith can accept. 779

In the Church this communion of men with God, in the “love [that] never ends,” is the purpose which governs everything in her that is a sacramental means, tied to this passing world. 776

So why wouldn’t we pray to the dead? We are in communion with them through the love of God. The Saints are with God and God is in heaven.

thank you

i tried tell her that but i dont think i was saying it right…:o

Those who are physically dead are surely not spiritually dead. Your friend would agree to this. Also, those passed away are alive in Christ. Yet, so are we by virtue of our baptism. We are all part of the Mystical Body of Christ, the Church - the Church here on earth, the Church in purgatory and the Church in heaven.

How do we know they are there? For those in our families who are passed away, we don’t really. But Jesus has given us reason to hope they are through the Gospel. As for modern Vatican-declared saints, no one can be declared a saint until TWO miracles have been approved and recorded by the Vatican. The miracles are the direct result of people on Earth praying to these holy people and asking for their intercession before God in the same way that you would ask a holy friend here on earth to pray for you.

**We are promised eternal life if we follow Jesus Christ, not death!
**
Jesus taught us; "And as for the dead being raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the bush, how God said to him, ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? **He is not God of the dead, but of the living; you are quite wrong."
**(Mk 12:26-27)

Good questions?

Unless the person in question is Canonized [proclaimed offically a Saint [big S] after a though investigtion, we don’t know with certitude?

How ever it does not really matter:) Why?

It is our bodies that die, but our Souls, like God Himself are Spiritual things. It is the “souls of the faifthfully departed” that we pray for, not their bodies. It is the soul that can suffer, it is the soul that can glorify God.😃 Amen?

Love and prayers,
Pat
