So this is what some Mormons said to me, trying to disprove the Trinity:

(quote) “How can God be both just and merciful? Our teaching is the only one that reconciles the two because Jesus is a separate god from the Father and so he makes intercession to the Father for us like it says in Hebrews 7. Basically, Jesus is the mercy and the Father is justice. But if there’s only one God how can God intercede to Himself???”(quote)

How should I go about answering this?

Mercy and justice are both good things. God by definition is the ultimate good, and therefore must possess all that is good–including both mercy and justice. If God possessed only mercy but not justice, then He would be lacking in something good and therefore would not be God at all, and vice versa.

Jesus is not a separate god from the Father, nor is he simply three different manifestians of God. We believe there is an underlying unity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit, which is realized as we read the Bible history. That tells of different encounters between man and God in Time. In the history of the Chosen people, who encounter him in the god of Abraham, who eventually meet him in the person of Jesus, who is also a man like themselves. We meet him ourselves through the same Holy Spirit of love which was manifested in him, and which afford us to join jesus and the saints in the relationship they enjoy with the Father. I do not insist on this formula. I only insist that the God of the Bible is the Three in One God.

Disclaimer! This is my personal view and I might not be correct.

In order to reconcile man’s original sin the price (Genesis) had to be paid.
A sacrifice had to be offered but the sacrificial victim needed to be a man.
Further the sacrifice needed to be sinless without blemish, that is what it stopped for any normal man to pay the price.

So God provided the sacrifice, and in His justice He would not ask someone to become the sacrifice.

God became man in order to pay our sin, and rescue us for God.

Easy. Justice and mercy are very closely related, you see. Justice is the giving of what one deserves. Mercy is the giving of more than one deserves. So why can’t one God do both?

I always give the explanation of GOD IN TRINITY to jehovah witnesses as follow god is like HO2 which is the nature of water, when it is frozen and become ice you still can find the HO2 in it, when it becomes steam, you still can find its nature, when it becomes any liquids you still can find its nature too. So it is the same wit God the father son and holly spirit. If they get it then you can give explanation further.

Why would you waste your breath talking to a cult follower. The bible ended with Jesus Christ… the book you follow. Jesus did not say follow any other teaching he said; “I am the light and the way.” those are his words. If your heart can not feel them then you are lost. Don’t expect religion to be a user’s manual it is not. You got to figure a few things out for yourself.

The question itself contradicts the Scriptures. To deny Jesus the power of judgement contradicts several verses in which we are taught Jesus will be the judge of the living and the dead:[BIBLEDRB]Acts 10:42[/BIBLEDRB] [BIBLEDRB]2 Timothy 4:1[/BIBLEDRB]

And to deny the Father the power of mercy is to make the benedictions written by Paul in both of his letters to Timothy false, in both of which he writes, “Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord,” and also the benediction written by John at the beginning of 2 John: “Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.” God the Father is both merciful and just, just as Jesus Christ is both merciful and just, so the argument itself is groundless.

Mercy and justice are both good things. God by definition is the ultimate good, and therefore must possess all that is good–including both mercy and justice. If God possessed only mercy but not justice, then He would be lacking in something good and therefore would not be God at all, and vice versa.
OK that makes sense. His objection caught me off guard because I had never thought of the two as opposed to each other before, but like you said in reality they are not.

Thanks everyone for all your help!

ummm I’m not sure what that means, we’re not supposed to evangelize?

and I wasn’t doubting the truth of the Trinity by the way, just needed some intellectual ammo, which is why I am here. 👍
