Hello everyone, so my students have a couple of questions about First Communion. Could you guys help me answer them? Thanks =)

How does the Body of Christ taste?
What kind of wine is used?
Are we eating the Body of Christ or bread?
Are we drinking the Blood of Christ or wine?
Is God blessing the food?

Do we have to wear fancy clothes?
• What do they have to wear (Any pics to share)?
• How much do they costs?
• Do we have to wear pretty clothes?
• Do we have to wear a dress?
• Can we wear jewelry?
• Can we wear high heels?
• What color do I have to wear for my clothes?
• Do the girls have to wear veils?

Can we have the Body of Christ after the Communion?
What age do you get to drink the wine?

What happens during First Communion?
• What do we say
• what do we do
• Do we have to drink the wine?
• Where will we be talking?
• Are we going to have to say any prayers by memory?
• Will I have to walk by myself?

What’s the meaning behind receiving First Communion?
• Why do we have First Communion’s?
• Why do we receive the Eucharist?

And how would you guys answer these kinds of concerns?
“Scared because I will be in front of all those people thank you.”

If you are teaching this for the first time and have difficulty with so many questions, you need to ask for the help of the Director of Religious Education in your parish, or, if none is available, the pastor, or an experienced Religious Education teacher. It is extremely important that the students get correct and helpful answers. I am not sure if Catholic Answers Forums will be able to give you the kind of help you need.

How does the Body of Christ taste?
You may give them an unconsecrated host to taste, and to practice receiving closer to the date.
What kind of wine is used?
**Special wine that the Church buys from a special distributor that meets certain criteria. **
Are we eating the Body of Christ or bread? THE BODY OF CHRIST

Is God blessing the food? What food?

Do we have to wear fancy clothes? **Yes, they should it’s a big day. **
• What do they have to wear (Any pics to share)? You DRE will know your priest’s preferences. Typically, a pure white knee length or floor length dress for the girls Boys will wear a crisp white dress shirt and dark slacks, a sport coat if it’s cool or they already have one. Everyone in Sunday shoes, no sneakers. Some cultures opt for a pure white suit for the boys, .
• How much do they costs? **Up to the parent’s budget. **
• Do we have to wear pretty clothes? **You’re receiving Jesus Christ for the first time, why wouldn’t you want to? **
• Do we have to wear a dress? Yes
• Can we wear jewelry? **A small Catholic medal or cross is fine, but generally nothing else. Tiny earrings, no dangling ones. **
• Can we wear high heels? **No. You will be standing a long time. **
• What color do I have to wear for my clothes? **Girls all white, boys all white or white and dark slacks. **
• Do the girls have to wear veils? **Depends on the parish. Some say yes. Some allow flowers or fancy barrettes, headpieces. **

What’s the meaning behind receiving First Communion? **These next three any catechist can handle. **
• Why do we have First Communion’s?
• Why do we receive the Eucharist?

And how would you guys answer these kinds of concerns?
“Scared because I will be in front of all those people thank you.”
If you are really scared, then tell the DRE he or she should do it themselves if this is a preliminary meeting.

Oh and I didn’t make that last sentence clear. I was talking about some of the concerns that my students brought up, not mine, that is if that’s what you meant by your comment.

So, I’m confused. Why doesn’t the first communion teacher know the answer to these questions?

It’s up to the Pastor. HAS to be real wine and usually a red-wine
Are we eating the Body of Christ or bread?
READ PLEASE John 6: 47-57 & 1st Cor. 11:23-30

We are eating the now GLORFIED Body, Blood, Soul & Divinity of Jesus Himself
Are we drinking the Blood of Christ or wine?
Same as above
Is God blessing the food?
The “food” is of a supernatural nature as It IS GOD

No, just clean, reasonable
• What do they have to wear (Any pics to share)?

This is optional up to Pastor and DRE: White is very common
• How much do they costs?

Varies greatly
• Do we have to wear pretty clothes?
Nice is NICE, but Jesus is more interested that you LOVE Him than in the way you dress
• Do we have to wear a dress?
That would be NICE, but up to Pastor
• Can we wear jewelry?
Yes
• Can we wear high heels?
Up to Pastor

• What color do I have to wear for my clothes?

Up to Pastor: White is the most popular color

YES so long as you fast 1 hour before and have NO unconfessed, unforgiven Mortal sins Jn 20:19-23
What age do you get to drink the wine?
Taking the wine is NOT absolutely necessary as the ENTIRE Jesus is present in Just the Host. The age will be up to PARENTS and Pastor

• What do we say
“AMEN” which means “I DO BELIEVE!”

• Where will we be talking?
Just saying “AMEN” AFTER receiving the Sacred- Host and or the wine [both times]
• Do we have to drink the wine?
NO!
• Are we going to have to say any prayers by memory?
No, but THANK Jesus when you return to your pew, and tell Him that YOU Love Him
• Will I have to walk by myself?
Usually in procession and NORAMLLY it is practiced before the BIG DAY
What’s the meaning behind receiving First Communion?
• Why do we have First Communion’s?
Because Jesus COMMANDED THAT WE DO This:

1st Cor, 11: 23-25

[23] For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus, the same night in which he was betrayed, took bread. [24] And giving thanks, broke, and said: Take ye, and eat: this is my body, which shall be delivered for you: this do for the commemoration of me. [25] In like manner also the chalice, after he had supped, saying: This chalice is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as often as you shall drink**, for the commemoration of me**.
• Why do we receive the Eucharist?
1st Cor. 11:23-25
[25] In like manner also the chalice, after he had supped, saying: This chalice is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as often as you shall drink,** for the commemoration of me**.

Because Jesus promised to be with US, Always Mt. 28:20
[20] Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and behold I am with you all days, even to the consummation of the world.

Grace is absolutely necessary for our salvation

The 7 sacraments are All a source of God’s GRACE, and NONE more so than Holy Communion because it really Is GOD, Jesus Christ.
And how would you guys answer these kinds of concerns?
“Scared because I will be in front of all those people thank you.”
I hope and pray this will aid you.

Much of what you ask as the NORM [can vary greatly] will be discussed by your DRE [Dirextor of religious education] and or your Pastor, so don’t sweat it.

PRAY MUCH & often.

And please DO READ the bible verses I suggested

Here is a sight to help you do that:

God BLESS YOU and those you are sharing our faith with!

Have a Blessed and Holy Christmas!

Patrick, let me knoe if you have other questions?

Men do not differ much about what things they will call evils; they differ enormously about what evils they will call excusable.
