I’ve never subscribed to any Catholic publication in my life, so I am in the unfortunate circumstance of not knowing the various publications and their editorial position…

My kid’s brought home this magazine subscription drive from school, and I am on the hook to subscribe to 3 magazines (1 for each kid).

I want three Catholic subscriptions, of which one will be Catholic Answers.

What should the other two be? Please keep in mind that I would describe myself as an orthodox Catholic that will only get irritated by reading anything that dissents from Church teaching. If the magazine is trying to sell me that I can vote for Kerry because Ratzinger said so, I will have a major case of apoplexy.

I’ve seen people express opinions in this forum that “such and such” magazine was notoriously heterodox or liberal, or that they never read certain other magazines. Some of these titles are well known. Please help me steer clear of them.

So, which magazines would you suggest? If you have more than two good choices, feel free to suggest all of them because the magazine subscription catalog does not list every publication.

I like* Crisis, Envoy,* and This Rock. First Things is also good.

Touchstone is ecumenical, not specifically Catholic, but very good.

I would agree with Joe,

Hey Joe, what about Catholic Digest? I like that mag however, some think it hmmm I’m thinking of the right word…not very conservative?

Thank you for the feedback. When I realized, however, that none of the magazines you mentioned were on the list of available magazines, I figured I may be better off specifying the list.

Here are the list of magazines I can choose from. They were listed under the heading of “Religion” and I am aware that some are Catholic and some are not.
  1. *]Angels on Earth
    *]At Home with Our Faith
    *]Biblical Archeology
    *]Campus Life
    *]Catholic Answer
    *]Catholic Parent
    *]Charisma
    *]Children’s Ministry
    *]Christian His. & Bio.
    *]Christian Music Planet
    *]Christian Parenting Today
    *]Christianity Today
    *]Contemporary Christian Music
    *]Discipleship Journal
    *]Faith & Family
    *]Guideposts
    *]Leadership
    *]Marriage Partnership
    *]Men of Integrity
    *]Ministries Today
    *]My Daily Visitor
    *]National Catholic Register
    *]New Man
    *]Our Sunday Visitor
    *]Pope Speaks
    *]Pray
    *]St. Anthony’s Messenger
    *]Today’s Christian Woman
    *]US Catholic
    *]Vida Cristiana

I also realized while posting this that the publication above is Catholic Answer, which I was mistaking for Catholic Answers. As I learned upon further investigation, Catholic Answers is the organization, while This Rock is the magazine it publishes. I have no clue as to what “Catholic Answer” magazine is.

Since I have appreciated this website, and have already made the decision to subscribe to Catholic magazines, I guess I will need to independently subscribe to This Rock.

    Thanks for your help.

Every time I was almost ready to subscribe, they ran an article that was so wrong it turned me off.

The National Catholic Register [not the national Catholic Reporter] is respected and enjoyed by many. I haven’t read it for several years; just had to cut down on subscriptions.

Our Sunday Visitor is interesting and safe, but a bit like oatmeal without salt - very bland. *

US Catholic is usually good, though I have heard a couple of complaints about it. I got it a few years ago as a gift but never renewed. I think they may occasionally go for rumors rather than fact, and not distinguish the two very well.

Saint Anthony Messenger used to be good. However, the stuff they have put out for Religious Ed lately * has a lot of errors. A couple of years ago I did a thorough review of their sheet on Holy Orders for my pastor. He promptly cancelled it.**

Catholic Answer is from Our Sunday Visitor, formerly editted by Fr Peter Stravinskas, new editor, new format, still excellent, Q&A a lot of topics like these forums, with authorotative answers, plus good articles. I recommend Faith & Family, and either newspaper National CAtholic REgister or Our Sunday Visitor. St. Anthony Messenger and Catholic Digest have become much less reliable in recent years, some very problematic writers. Be careful there. US Catholic is not Catholic in editorial content, don’t waste your time.
