Need help in how to receive Communion on the tongue and not in my hand

Our priest always does after he is finished “washing” the “dishes.”
And even if they don’t wash their hands, they do dust them off thoroughly then wash the chalice that they dusted their hands into. Most people I see dust their hands off on their pants and Our Lord falls on the floor.
The Extraordinary Ministers at my parish all wash their hands in a little bowl before returning to their pew.
I do know that receiving on the tongue is preferred by the Church. The reason receiving on the hand was permited was during a plague in England people would not receive Holy Communion because they were afraid of contracting the disease from the priest’s hands which had maybe given Holy Communion to an infected person. So Rome allowed receiving on the hand in England and it spread.

As a usher in seven churches here in Las Vegas, I have seen where most of the laity put their hands before going down for communion. Woman ajusting their braest, wiping their mouths and coughing, and the man by scraching their bare legs and chest as well as other places is total disrespect for our Lord.

I remember “way back when” I made my First Communion. Receiving on the tongue was the only way to receive, and I remember the good sisters teaching the class how to do it. My how I wish both ways were taught nowadays. Reception of Communion on-the-tongue is still the communicants choice. Communion on-the-tongue is the universal way of receiving Communion while Communion in-the-hand is only an indult granted to a few countries (the United States became one of those few countries a few years after Vatican II.)

Communion in the hand is allowed by the Church, but it is the extraordinary form, while communion on the tongue is the preferred and ordinary form.

What church to you go to in Vegas? I belong to Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, but we like to attend St. Bridget’s hybrid mass. You did mean seven masses and not seven churches right? Please either PM your parish or post it, I think you are the first person I have met here who is from Vegas and who hates communion on the hand.

I hate to say it, but no, I have not received Communion on my tongue, still receiving via the hand. I wish I could get over my “fear” - hopefully someday I will. I pray that the Holy Spirit can just overcome me and I will be able to.

I have the same fear as you do. I want to start going to a TLM, but I only tried Communion by the tongue once before, and I had to grab the Host with my teeth because I almost dropped it.

Priests (and others) who are used to giving people Communion on their tongues are far more likely to prevent accidents with people who aren’t familiar with receiving on the tongue.

Basically, open your mouth a reasonable amount and stick your tongue out a reasonable amount: sticking the tip of your tongue through pursed lips won’t cut it! The priest will probably place the Host on your tongue in this manner: he is holding end “A” of the Host, and he will place end “B” on your tongue far enough down that when he lets go of end “A”, end “A” will rest on the front of your tongue. So give the priest enough space to work with!

You’re welcome. If only parishes around the world taught children and converts/reverts about how to receive Holy Communion on the tongue (in addition to in the hand where that practice is permitted by law), people wouldn’t feel so odd or scared or embarrassed asking about it.

I think it’s the same thing with confession… if it were mentioned more often, available more often, taught properly, etc., people wouldn’t feel so scared about it and they would approach it seriously, with real contrition, and they would truly recognize its fruits!

After a year of getting the nerve to do it, I am SO EXCITED to tell you that last night at Mass, I received Communion on the tongue for the first time! :yyeess:

Everytime I go up for Communion, at the last minute I would chicken out. But last night at the last minute I received directly on the tongue and let me tell you that it will be this way forever! I don’t know what I was so nervous about, It was completely natural and it just felt right.

I just wanted to thank everyone who has prayed for me on this. You all mean alot to me.

I am also an EMHC. When a communicant has his or her hands full, such as when holding a child, I give them the Host on the tongue. I was taught to do this.

To the OP: I do not know how tall you are, but if you wish to receive on the tongue, I recommend going in the line where the priest/deacon/EMHC is tall. If the minister is much shorter than you, it may be awkward for him or her to reach your mouth.

the proper posture for receiving in this way is kneeling at a communion rail, which has been designed to be the proper height for this practice for both the communicant and the minister, and moreover allows the server and paten to assist. In my mind when they removed the facility to kneel at the proper height (and to arise gracefully) they also removed my need to receive this way–an appalling lack of charity to those who retain this preference. I only served as an EMHC briefly, because I have problems with the entire idea of lay ministers, but stopped because of arthritis, however because of my height relative to most standing adults, it is nearly impossible for me to administer properly on the tongue.

My vote is to return the communion rails and for priests to administer by intinction, from vessels designed for that purpose. Does not matter how long it takes. During that time we can return to the choir and organist singing and playing so much of the legacy of sacred music of which we have been deprived for too long, to aid meditation of those who are waiting.

Good for you MSParrott!

One of the things that perplexed me when I returned to the church was communion in the hand. (That tells you how long I was away, doesn’t it!)

Now that I have returned to communion on the tongue I will certainly not go back to the hand. Yes, it did take getting up courage–my church is small and most were taking in the hand. And you gotta watch the position of your hands and keep them clasped or you give the priest EMHC the wrong message!

Now I note more taking communion on the tongue. Many young people, too!

I would not mind returning to kneeling at the rail.

It is not proper to receive Communion in the hand for your hands are not worthy to hold the Body of Christ. As the priest cleanses his hands so should the Eucharist minister, by dipping thier fingers in holy water before and after the disturbution of the Eucharist.
Also a paton should be used to catch the spec’s that fall from the Eucharist in the church today.
