I recently went on a blind date with a born again. I got to the coffee shop early because I was told she is always on time. I got my drink and sat down. Soon a beautiful girl walked in and I stood to greet her. It was her finest moment. I was unaware she was a kool-aid drinker.

I was naive to the born again subject so I asked. Oops…my bad. This began a 3-hour lecture. So her catholic dad is in hell and I will join him where my skin will be burned off me for enternity. People with AIDS deserve it? Gays have no rights? My mouth must have been open the entire time. I could hardly believe my ears. I could not even argue, because she had memorized passages. Anyone know any good anti-born again arguments?

Whew it is over now, the scary lady went away 🙂

A number of shorter pieces are available on the CA home page plus books that can be purchased. Since I can’t remember all the passages either, I like to keep a topical “cheat sheet” in the back of my bible. Since most of the fundies won’t accept any argument other than scripture, it comes in handy. Be warned, though, that if you debunk any of their arguments, then you are obviously misinterpreting the bible. At that point you can ask by what authority their interpretation is more correct than yours. Good luck and God bless.

“I was unaware she was a kool-aid drinker.”

Please explain this comment

“kool-aid drinker” I made it up, I was referring to Jim Jones and his cult followers who drank the poisioned kool-aid. 😛

mike,

at the very least give us some specifics to help you through this. What are some specific, or at least general topics? What were some passages quoted? You dont have to remember it all, just enough to know some specific attacks.

I suggest just not going on any more blind dates with born agains. Or if you do, stay away from the religion topic.

Geezer, are you suggesting we bring cheat sheets on dates and then sprawl them out on a table if need be? At Starbucks?

I second that. Now, when my very kind friends offer to fix me up - I make sure I inquire now if the very lucky gentleman is Catholic. If not, then no dice.

My friends always forget to ask that one ity bity question- by the way, as if it is just an incidental.

Yes. This is what I say:

“How kind of you to point that out. Have you heard anything about the hockey lockout? I am afraid I must be somewhere in fifteen minutes. It’s been delightful having this time with you. See you anon.” 🙂

The very best “cheat sheet” is located between our ears my friends. I can remember to this day the voice of my sainted grandmother answering her wise-*** grandson (moi) when I mouthed off that it was wrong to pray for the dead. "Well Michael, it’s right there in the Bible where 2nd Maccabees 12:46 says ‘It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins.’ I had no answer for that but hey I was a know-it-all at 17 anyway.

People say Catholics don’t know their Bible, but the fact is that most Christians are woefully lacking in the simple Bible knowlege that just reading it will provide. I mean…don’t we all have at least 15-30 minutes a day that we could spend on the best thing we’re gonna find all day? (Then add in some time in prayer…) Beats the socks off the evening news… There’s even a plenary indulgence for it, so that tells you that Holy Mother Church thinks it’s pretty important.

As for that blind date…isn’t our compatiblity of faith important enough to make it a criteria for our search for a soul mate?
I agree…it had to be great when the scarey lady went away.
Pax vobiscum,

Good post, Millitant!

I would also like to point out that we should always use scripture to discuss with these “born again types.”

You see… they feel all one needs to do is read the Bible… and the Holy Spirit will give you the answer.

Tell them your Catholic position… say that you read the Bible… .and here is “what I got…”

Because… according to THEIR RULE… It is Bible ALONE.

Then the fun part comes up… if you disagree you can say “who is right?” “Who has the authority?”

Then scripture comes in REAL HANDY… because it tells us in these situations to “take it to the Church.”

It is all about “who has the authority” to interpret the Bible. Did the Bible create the Church? Or did the Church birth the Bible?

I understand you had an unpleasant experience with this young lady.

However, implying that she is just a blind follower and unable to think for herself is rude and un-called for. (Jim Jones Kool-aid-drinker) You may disagree with her. But that’s the beauty of free will. She may have been pushy and not sensitive to your beliefs, but that doesn’t mean she is a blind follower. But if she were to read your comments, she might just as well call you a cool-aid-drinker. It sounds like although you had opposite points of view, she knew what her point was. You should criticize her blunt and poor behavior, and not call her a kool-aid-drinker.

Perhaps you should find out the religious beliefs of your blind dates in the future to avoid such confrontations.

.

Y’know, I wish i could find people like this. Most of the people I meet are just apathetic about religion in general.

That’s why I like these forums! You guy’s are cool! 👍 Even the ones that disagree!
