Good Day Fellow Catholic Forum readers!

I can’t seem to find any sources of Peter Damian’s Philosophy on the internet and also I can’t find his books in my area.

Our project is how will Peter Damian answer this question: Is God merely Human intervention?

And I really need to read St. Peter Damian’s “De Divina Omnipotentia” for our project can someone explain/summarize to me this article?

Thank you!

The key word looks like “merely”. Specific to the context, the answer could be yes, if, say, God is being “used” as intervention for self serving gain. Would a Saint and Doctor say He is “merely” human intervention? You need to ask why is God so effective at bringing about peace for people? Obviously, there is something to God’s omnipotence such that if we see results without explanation that we can understand, such as in the case of the miracle, God must be more than merely intervention – since humans can’t predictably will miracles. Also, Damian was concerned with rhetoric, which is human in its mere sense, but of extraordinary power in bringing about expedient peace when its subject is divinity. You can see on these forums, people disagree all the time, but we must understand and have faith that each in his corner of the room is growing closer to the lord through these very disagreements.
Welcome to the forums and good luck on your project!
Maybe you’ll find someone who speaks to Damian. He is a Saint, so you can pray to him for guidance.

Sure, it’s all on the net. Google for “Migne Latina Patrologia”, and there is a site- Catholic Documents, or something. It will have an index of the entire Migne Latin Patrology (a little more than 200 volumes). I think Damian, is around no 140 or so (there are a couple of volumes of his work).

You can download the documents you wants as PDF’s, and read it from the comfort of your desktop.

Look- I’ll Google it myself and give you a link:
documentacatholicaomnia.eu/1815-1875,_Migne,_Patrologia_Latina_01._Rerum_Conspectus_Pro_Tomis_Ordinatus,_MLT.html

That’s sound like a pretty odd topic- such a position would have been considered absurd- or not even considered- in those days. One of the things about Peter Damien was God’s absolute supremacy- that He could change the past if He chose, or make a square circle, etc. and also absolute freedom- He could command murder, if He wished. He could be described as pretty pessimistic about humanity, and life, the world, etc. Some of his stuff is pretty unpalatable to the modern reader, like on physical penances,

In his emphasis on the abolsute freedom of God- he has something in common with Ockham. He also has a lot of common with Al-Ghazali, too, IMO.
