Hi all,

This is hard for me to admit, but I struggle with same sex attraction and have recently acted on these feelings. Please give me whatever advice you can to help me overcome this tempation from now on. I feel very ashamed and disgusted with myself.

Hi there NeedHelp…

First, temptation is not at all sinful, nor anything to be ashamed of in any way. About the only thing I would recommend is that you do not place yourself in a situation where the temptation is likely to occur…and pray about the situation.
Well done for presenting your problem and especially if it was hard to do…that is a real victory!
There is a beautiful little aspiration to Our Lady: “Our Lady of Holy Purity, please guide guard and protect me”. I used to say as a child three Hail Mary’s followed after each Hail Mary by the aspiration.
Finally, it is always good and beneficial if you have a nun or priest or perhaps some wise and holy lay person that you could talk about re your temptation and shame. Or you could mention it in confession, not because it is sinful, but because Father may be able to wisely advise you far better than I.

Hey need help, firstly do not feel ashamed or disgusted with yourself, you have shown a moment of weakness, that is all. You are human, and expected to sometimes not fully acheive the teachings of the church. Secondly, everyone here will be praying for you, I would second Barbara by advising you to speak to someone you have confidence in. 🙂

your answer is Jesus. He is the only one who can can help you with this problem…and i am telling you this because i have experienced His healing & delivering power in my own life in various areas especially when battling against impurity. He is forgiving and loves u just as you are. Just confess your sin since you said you acted upon it & try to avoid situations where you could fall into sin…but trust wholly in Jesus’ help. He is the only one who can give u the grace to say no to temptation. The Lord is near to all those who call upon Him, to all who call upon him inTruth.(Ps 145:18)
Spend alot of time in prayer…just speak to Him a u would to a friend and He will not fail u. God Bless u.

I disagree.

The OP has shown repentance of the sin. And seeks guidance. It is very good that he has seen sin for what it is. Sin IS disgusting and horrible in whatever form.

Secondly, we are always supposed to follow the teachings of the church. The Church does not abandon us if we fail, but certainly it expects us to always give it our best.

Thirdly, need help. Your cross from Almighty God is big, but he only gives us what we can handle. Thank Him for showing you the evil of this sin and giving you the grace to feel repentance for it.

Rosary, every day = amazing help. It took five days of me saying the rosary once every day for our Lady to change me from being complacent about my faith and not really listening to God to being head over heels in love with Him so to speak. FIVE DAYS!

Perhaps you misunderstand, I mean to say that one should not dwell on feelings of disgust, and infact should try to let them go and accept that what is done is done. We all sin, and one should not feel unecessary pain or over a sin when infact one could be chanelling energy into efforts to become better. Instead look to the future and be positive about fully aligning yourself with Gods teachings. 🙂

Exactly, this is what I wish to show, however I also feel that even though we do sin and sometimes fail, it does not mean that we have not been trying our best, or that we did not intend to try our best - this is human nature.

Hi there Andre… NeedHelp was only tempted and resisted the tempation, hence there is nothing of sin in it.

You make an excellent point I think Libero…NeedHelp does not need to feel shame or disgust, it was merely a temptation and one that was resisted. Every single one of us can be subject to any temptation at any time…and who is to know what we may well be tempted towards at some future point? I hope I will have the fortitude, Faith and courage of NeedHelp and resist any strong temptation that may come my way in future. It may possibly not be the same in nature, but could be equally as serious if not moreso. Who can know?

But NeedHelp, I would underscore that to speak to someone you trust and feel comfortable with is an excellent means of combatting temptation, and especially if that person shows wisdom, holiness and is experienced in counselling and/or direction…such as a priest. Priests who belong to Religious Orders usually have the qualities I mentioned and are certainly skilled in counselling and spiritual direction.
