Hi - I’m sure there’s probably a more appropriate place for this post but I’m not sure where it would be. Mods, feel free to move at will!

I have a somewhat unusual situation. Both my parents are deceased. None of us are Catholic but I have reason to believe my father was married before to a Catholic woman, and that I have two half-sisters who may or may not be still living. I’m trying to find them. I know absolutely nothing about them - or next to nothing, anyway.

What I was told though was that my dad and his first wife’s marriage was annulled at her family’s insistence. (They also demanded he not contact the girls, which it appears he agreed with-- which is another story altogether, I guess.)

I’m wondering if there would be any way I could search annulment records to find out more information on this marriage, like a family or maiden name.

If anyone else has other ideas, I’d be appreciative. I even sent in a request to that “Locator” show but so far, no dice. Probably don’t have enough information for him.

Thanks!

Where are you located? Country/state?
If in the USA, Skip the annulment records; lookup the civil marriage records in the county/state/year that your dad was previously married in; civil records are public data.

Sacramental records are not public records.

You best bet is to contact the civil govm’t for copies of the legal docs. You might also want to contact your local Mormon congregation, they are experts at genelogical research.

Thanks for the replies.

I’m in North Carolina, but the marriage took place in California somewhere - I’m guessing northern, because the source who told me this (who’s reliable) said the family of the first wife owned a vineyard.

But since I don’t know what county or year, it’s hard to know where to start. Then again, marriage records are state-level, right? Not county. Then AGAIN, there’s a time problem here – this marriage would have been around the time of WWII. Way before computer records, of course.

My only other clue is that the source thought the wife’s family was of Mexican heritage.

Thank you again for the suggestions - will try that out.

I’d start by just popping names into the computer and see what it brings up. I’ve even found my deceased father’s name and social security number on the web. If the last name is the same as yours, you might just try that and start by typing in the last name with California. There are many web sites where you can do free searches, like intellius. I would not pay for anything. I just typed in my Dad’s name there and pulled up mine and my mother’s names along with his, and used the United States instead of just one state. But again, I stress, don’t pay for anything. Just keep trying different sites with the names available. I’ve also looked for court documents online, so if you have any ideas as to whereabouts you might find something. It’s tedious, but for the research I had to do it paid off. I’m still looking for more info, but found a big chunk. Just by clicking anywhere you see the name you might be able to get clues, as well. I found an obit notice that led me to connecting names. My Dad was a lot older than yours. Good luck.
