Hello.
So I need some encouragement and prayer.
As a current convert going through RCIA, I’m still having many struggles. I grew up Protestant so my family can be kinda discouraging about certain decisions. Recently, me and my dad discussed alcohol. Hes basically disappointed and saying that I know what I’m doing is wrong and is assuming I drink and drive, drinkings a sin, etc. I recently discovered this wasn’t a sin and so I do enjoy it now, but it’s frustrating because he wants to act like I’ve made some evil decisions and it just puts me down. He says I can’t be living in his house if I drink, but then again he was only bothered because it’s beer. So apparently wine is ok, but not beer. Should I just not drink at all out of respect? I mean I don’t have to have alcohol l, but I do enjoy it and feel as though everytime I start enjoying something there’s a problem. I feel like a fool and not good enough for God at times. I feel he ls not going to bless me anymore if I become Catholic and he disappointed in me… It’s very discouraging also as I’m trying to get over major stress i’ve had and trying to convert isn’t easy. I feel I could be headed the wrong direction at times. My conscience bothers me about some things, but then again my conscience has deceived many many times… Please pray for me and advice is much appreciated.

I’m assuming that you an adult are of legal drinking age but yes, we should respect our parents and while drinking is not a sin I would wait until I had moved out if I was you.

Looks like Satan really doesn’t want you to convert. I assume you began RCIA because you have reason to believe that the Catholic Church is the true Church. You have not mentioned doubting doctrine so simply remind yourself that Jesus wants you in the Church he founded. If you do have doubts ask.

Are you minor, or just living with your folks?

I’m a revert, and when I told my wife I thought I had to go back to the Church she was so mad she threatened to divorce me (in her defense she was exceptionally pregnant and emotional). When it comes to the people you live with I’ve not found argument, even healthy ones, to be of much use. Your best bet is to focus on preparing for your reception into the Church and to start leading as full a Catholic life as possible. Let your life be a witness to your family; the proof is in the pudding.

Be aware the devil is absolutely going to double down on you and he will use anyone and anything to get you off track, especially people you know love you and you respect. You have to expect it and prepare as best you can. I said the St. Michael prayer many, many times a day as I got nearer to Confirmation, and I had people I never expected become stumbling blocks. You’re in a trying time spiritually, emotionally. Lean on the Lord for strength and wisdom.

I agree. And yes I am of legal age. Maybe I should just stick with wine until I move out, or at least talk with him again and clear some things up… It’s set kinda back and forth sometimes. He already knew this prior, but now it’s the beer that’s extremely non Christian apparently. I agree, we must respect our parents.

If your dad thinks you’re drinking and driving, he’s going to be worried, of course. But you’re not doing that.

If you’re of legal drinking age and you just enjoy a social drink, there’s nothing wrong with that. Social drinking isn’t a sin. However, some people have problems with drinking responsibly, and parents always worry about the worst scenario. Your dad may be over-protective, or he may have had experience in his life of people drinking too much.

Maybe try talking to your dad again, and reassure him that you would never drive after having a drink and that you would never drink to excess. If you can’t resolve it with him, you’ll have to decide whether this is a big issue for you, or just something you can put to one side until you are living independently.

I wish you well in RCIA - I do hope you can work through things with your family and that they come to understand and accept your desire to become a Catholic.

I appreciate this. Talking to him one on one should help. Just have to get over my fears of confronting him in some situations. Thanks again and God bless

Sometimes its better to bend rather than break… not drinking as per your parents wishes may seem stupid but you can consider it as a sacrifice for the conversion of your parents so that they understand you and maybe from your example they may follow you 🙂

I love drinking especially on weekends but having lost my father and living alone with my mother she does not approve entirely of my habit… so I can relate to you somewhat… it does get annoying at times but for the sake of peace at the home I do listen to her although at times it may seem like a unwanted interference but also at times you never know it may turn out to be for ones own good.

You will surely get discouraging thoughts but more important than the thoughts is how firm you are in your decision as its sort of a testing time for you and you either fight it and be victorious or give in and lose.

Having said that God comes first even before family and friends so let not those close to you be the cause of any hindrance in your journey and love for God.

I appreciate the response. Sorry about your father. I will discern and pray on this. God bless you and happy Thanksgiving!
