The Lenton season has provided incredible opportunity during work breads for delving into Catholicism and why the Church holds to some of its beliefs. However, tonight I’m walking into a hornet’s nest unarmed. One of my co-workers, a staunch anti-Catholic (actually wounded fallen-away Catholic) is convinced that one of the former popes removed the rosary from the Church for a time. He is planning to bring in his proof tonight, which will supposedly prove inconsistancies in Catholic theology. Does anyone have any info on this? I’ve spent the last couple of hours online trying to find something and have so far come up empty-handed. Any help you could provide would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The Rosary isn’t a matter of doctrine. It is a devotion. It isn’t mandatory for Catholics…and to ask our Mother’s intercession has never been outlawed by the Church, nor has reflection on the life of Jesus. This is what the Rosary is basically about so don’t let this man cloud the waters for you. Even were a Catholic devotion to be discontinued for a time, the essential theology remains unchanged. The Divine Mercy devotion was suspended for a time until the Church ascertained its authenticity. The suspension of this devotion in no way rejected or betrayed the profound relevance of Catholic theology concerning the value of Christ’s salvation.
