My children are absolutely devastated! One of our parish priests, Fr. Stefan, has been reassigned to a new parish nearby. As our pastor mentioned at Mass the other day, it represents such a huge expression of confidence that Fr. Stefan is being offered the position of parochial vicar of the nearby parish. Although I know this is such a splendid event for Fr. Stefan (and for the new parish as he is a wonderful priest!), my own family is so sad to see him go (as I suspect is our own pastor!).

There will be a “reception” to say good-bye to Fr. Stefan after the Sunday Masses next week and my children would like to give him a “going away gift” – any thoughts on a simple gift that they could buy or make for Father?

Many thanks for any help!

Is there a local Catholic Book Store or supply house that handles shirts, slacks, etc for priests. Perhaps a gift certificate.

I think you should give him a framed family portrait. Our priest has a wall of family portraits in the rectory that he has taken with him thru all his assignments. I know he is very fond of them.
A personalized gift is most appropriate.

Good luck. I also dread the day our priest leaves. It must be heartbreaking. 😦

Book of tickets to the local car wash or quick-lube. No glamorous, but what priest wants to spend money on THAT?

Ask him to come to dinner. Priests are usually ill feed.

God bless,
Deacon Tony SFO

Gear the gift toward the specific priest. Sports tickets are a luxury they ususally can’t afford, if he is into that. A gift certificate to whatever store might be of interest to him (all men like *something *at either Academy or Home Depot). One more idea I have done: a dining gift card of some sort.

A photo scrap book, a gift of yourselves – have him for dinner, write him a long letter and tell him how much you care for him, etc.

A basket of goodies, cookies, maybe some of those mixes in a jar that you can give for snacks, some nice bookmarks, something pleasant to relax with, some cozy socks or other panpering kind of gift. A nice religious print or statue.

We had to say good bye to the priest who officiated at our wedding and my RCIA year. Nineteen years later, I got to see him again and it was on our anniversary. He was wearing the exact same stole!

It is so wonderful to have Fr. Dave back to be the pastor for my son’s school.

May you have the chance to see Fr Stefen again. It has been a great joy for us Fr. Dave.

Thanks so much for all the wonderful ideas!! I’m printing them all out – the kids would like to each give him something so I’m glad for all the choices y’all gave 🙂
