Yes, JPII did make a statement (which would be helpful for you to read and share with your priest) but it is not the statement that created the conditions, only a recognition that they exist. In that statement, he proclaims that the Church has always believed that we do not have the authority from Christ to ordain women. This fact will not change even if another pope comes along and decides differently.
He is basing his objection on a misunderstanding of the Church’s position, and the source of it. The source of the position does not come from the Pope’s opinion, but the Teaching of Jesus that was passed down to us through the Apostles. It is part of the Divine Deposit of Faith that was once for all given to the Church. No one has the authority to change it.
