Astounding! I’ve started watching the soap again, after decades, a year or so ago. It is pretty easy going and not too OTT.

But in the last 4-6 weeks they’ve introduced a very good looking young man, who lost his memory in a blast. He fell in love with a beautiful girl, on the show BUT nothing happened between them as he refused until he knew who he was.

He gets his memory back after weeks and then realises he’s a Catholic priest, who was in the town to decide whether to remain in the priesthood - he was visiting an older priest.

So the story’s gone back and forth between his vocation, or the girl and he’s finally chosen to remain a priest! No kisses, nothing untoward. He had asked God for a sign to chose, and after praying on returning to the church he found the older priest was lying dead.

The girl, to comfort him, told him he would carry the older priest’s legacy in his heart for ever - which he then told her later was the sign, from God, to continue as a priest. The older priest had wanted him to takeover his parish, after he was gone (obviously that’s not the way it works, in real life.)

Also, rosary beads were shown in the show, the priest praying and when telling the girl his choice (who he stated he loves), ‘Jesus shed his life for us on the cross and this is the least I can do for him.’

Gobsmacked! I HOPE that’s the end of the story and no shenanighans between the priest and her later on. 😦

However, I am VERY pleasantly surprised considering how secular the media is these days. Very refreshing!

What time was this set in? Wasn’t anyone looking for him? Wouldn’t the bishop or at least the vicar-general (depending on the period) keep an eye out for him?

Just wondering. 🙂

It’s based in 2016, it’s just a silly soap about neighbours in a residential suburb, of Australia. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neighbours

Needless to say, the stories are not completely factually correct, however the priest had taken leave, to see if he wished to stay in his vocation, so no-one was looking for him.

But there has been practically no religion in the show, for decades, so this is very surprising. God is rarely if ever mentioned. No-one goes to church.

Other UK soaps treat religion like insanity, at best. They usually have story-lines with Church of England vicars, that are married about 3 times, sleeping with others, beating up their elderly parents and/or they’re gay and sleeping with many partners, whilst still in their roles, as vicars, of their churches and discussing church issues with their bishops. I.E. they make religion out to look completely hypocritical and a waste of time.
