Hi,

I am looking for a document by the church Father Nemesius, entitled De Natura Hominis. I cannot find an English translation anywhere on the net. Could someone point me to it or else email me a copy?

Thanks,
Erasmus

I couldn’t find a complete online copy, but have you ever tried interlibrary loan? It allows your local library to send for almost any book they don’t have in their collection and have it shipped to your location free of charge. Take this information with you and ask your local librarian if they offer access to interlibrary loan and if they can get the following translation for you by that method:

worldcat.org/title/on-the-nature-of-man/oclc/182736123

Do you really want the Latin version?

English translations are readily available on Amazon. It seems that a digital copy is available for $2.90, and a hardcopy for $15.71 (including shipping).

I found a complete translation into French that is available at:

archive.org/stream/NemesiusDeLaNatureDeLhomme/NemesiusDeLaNatureDeLhomme_djvu.txt

I applied Google Translate, which results in a complete English translation, but it’s not very intelligible in some places. Scroll down to Chapter I:

Here’s a sample paragraph: A stone contrasts nicely with another stone by
some properties, but the lodestone
appears to differ from the other in nature
it attracts iron, and it attaches as
if she wanted to draw its food. Not only
ing it exerts its action on a piece of
iron, but it seems to communicate its power
several, which attract each other when
they are in contact with it. Indeed, a piece
iron that affects a lodestone attracts a
one other piece of iron.

It’s in the Library of Christian Classics, in one volume with the Catechetical Homilies of Cyril of Jerusalem. It should be in any good public library or half-way decent academic library.

Not everything has to be on the Internet, you know. If your library doesn’t have it, it should be able to order it via ILL.

It used to be attributed to Gregory of Nyssa, but I don’t think that will help you find it online:shrug:

Dear all,

Thank you so much for your helpful responses to my posting. I have not managed to procure a copy as yet (all libraries that have a copy are outside of my city), but am in touch with a Jesuit father who has proven very helpful.

Thanks once again,
Erasmus
