My wife and myself started binge watching the docuseries last night. In fact, an article in the Catholic Free Press, suggested that Catholics should watch it.

Anyway, my wife and myself grew up in the same time period. In fact we graduated in 1970, the same as the two women who were former students of Sister Kathy’s.

What we saw is that Fr Maskell, had absolute power over the victims, to the point of even getting police and politicians to participate in raping the young girls.

Who could they turn to ?

Also, the first episode showed how Fr Maskell was raised by a fanatical mother, who had him playing priest from the age of five. His mother even made vestments for him and sorted out the white Necco Wafer Candies for him to use as make-believe hosts.

Most likely, he was sexually repressed during puberty which influenced ins warped behavior.

One of the victims, Jane Doe, was sexually abused by her pedophile uncle and when she confessed, she told Fr Maskell about it. Fr Maskell, used this against her, saying she was the cause of her uncle’s sins.

Anyway, it’s a good series and it showed how we did place priests on pedestals back in the 50’s and 60’s.

Thank God the Church is being purged of this evil, although I know there will always be some perverts left.

Interesting assessments of the show, I missed the part where Father Maskells mother had him play the priest. I thought he did that of his own accord. My feeling is that Maskell must have been sexually abused himself. That sort of depth of depravity doesn’t just happen without a catalyst.

I also missed the part about his Mother being fanatical and having him play priest
using Necco wafers.

I believe it’s in either the 1st or 2nd episode.

She made little vestments for her boy to play priest and separated the white Necco Wafers from the rest, and gave them to the boy to use as make believe Holy Communion.

There is no mention of him being sexually abused.

I’m going to scan through those two episodes to be sure I have the right priest.

There was also Fr Magnus who was also a monster.

Jim

OK, just scanned through episodes one and two.

The information about Fr Maskell growing up and playing priest and his mother making little vestments for him is in episode 2, about 16:50 and 17:59 into the film.

Instead of being outside playing as other boys were, Maskell was playing Mass using Necco Wafers, which his mother sorted out the white one’s so they would resemble the hosts of Holy Communion.

BTW, I remember playing Mass using Necco Wafers too, but it was our own idea and not forced by my mother, who in fact had a problem with us using Necco Wafers to resemble Holy Communion. She saw something disrespectful about it.

Jim

Oh, he probably was. But then again, the police were just as corrupt back then and protected him, most likely.
Yes, he was hidden away and I don’t think the police were anxious to have him questioned.
