I would say so. People often link to it on this site, even the apologists themselves, and I have never seen anything on the New Advent site I did not like the look of.

A friend of mine said that a Byzantine Catholic had said it’s biased towards the Byzantine Rite and very outdated while I’ve found it reliable, informative and helpful.

It’s reliable, though they do need to update it like add the Catechism as well as add new entries to the Catholic Encyclopedia. I did find many of the writings of the Church Fathers as well as the Councils there.

I second (or third?) that. My (former) RCIA cantidate (who I share an office with and is a new Catholic along with the rest of his family!) used newadvent.org to cinch the selection of his Saint taken at Confirmation (St. John Christostom) based on his writings found on NA. Now we tag-team some of our willing protestant co-workers in lively debate. And some seeds have been planted because of it.

I believe it was originally a labor of love, and that the site owner’s primary goal several years ago was simply to make the entire 1917 Catholic Encyclopedia (which is in the public domain) freely accessible on the Web, complete with cross references and foot notes. It was a huge undertaking.

Because the Encyclopedia is a completed work, no one will “update” those encyclopedia articles, so when you’re looking things up there, do remember that it is nearly a century old.

It’s an excellent resource for looking up information on pre-twentieth century saints and such.
