New Age/Reincarnation/Animal Souls

A book I’m reading (The Good Good Pig) is by an extreme animal lover. She claims that in her travels around the world shamans and fortune-tellers have told her again and again that she is a very old soul, and that this is her “first incarnation as a human.”

Of course, as a Catholic and a natural skeptic, I reject reincarnation.

However, it does make me wonder a bit how so many different people in her travels have noted this similar “aura” about her.

Let’s just start from the assumption that it is indeed true that many different individuals around the world have noticed something unusual in the “spirit” of this author. This is certainly possible. But to all say similar things…what would be a rational and Catholic explanation for this?

(Note to all the wags: resist the urge to say, “Maybe it’s because she looks like a horse/pig/rhino…etc” 😛 )
 
As someone with a background in psychology and dealing with people, it is a matter of reading someones responses and asking the right questions. If you know what you are looking for, and what to ask, you can tell anyone what they want to hear.
 
Well, it would be very easy for that to happen if she was posessed by a type of deceptive demon that would be able to communicate in some fashion with people that are involved in occult activities.

That “aura” is the aura of that demon, who exudes the deception.

Ahh. Yes. So true. I remember seeing a PBS show in which a skeptic traveled to Russia to see some sisters who reportedly could look at a photo of someone and reveal “truths” about this individual.

The skeptic brought a suitcase full of photos and allowed them to choose a photo to “read”. They chose a photo of Ted Bundy. Then they asked the skeptic what he wanted to know about the individual in the photo. The skeptic refused to ask any questions, as he knew that whatever questions he asked would lead the “psychics” down a path of knowledge about the photo. So, he sat there and patiently listened to their reading of who the individual was in the photo but revealed nothing through any questions.

Naturally, they got it all wrong. 😉
 
I’ve done a little card reading. There are three reasons a person would come in for a reading:
  1. Curious, wants to see self as mysterious, exotic and open to new ideas. A rebel, full of surprises, or wants to be seen as such. Body language – swings, walks leaning a little back, looks a lot from side to side, plays with accessories, smirks, handles things, makes big-eyed expressions and sucks in cheeks as if overwhelmed by deep emotion. Changeable affect.
    Reader says, “You are a very mystical person. You are wiser than people appreciate. You were a queen/king in a past life, and you were (insert unbelievable romantic story here). Despite your professional status (playing the probability on this one), you refuse to accept the norm as your script for life. You are brave and highly imaginative, with unusual depth and vision. You have not come with a problem so much as a quest.”
  2. Serious problem, desperate, out of ideas. Under pressure from all sides. About to give up.
    Body language – Slinks, looks up nervously, randomly, leans away from things, clears throat a lot, sits still or fidgets but doesn’t seem enthisiastic. Stares forward or away or down. Sad eyes. Pallid.
    Reader says, “You’re at a crossroads. Here are the people in your life, and they’re fighting as you stand in the middle afraid to move. But you must go one way or the other. It’s up to you.”
  3. Investigator.
    Body language – normal, neutral, guarded or too casual, bored.
    Reader says, “I’m not getting much. The planets aren’t aligned right tonight. Come back another day, please.”🤷
 
This may be a little off topic, but I thought I’d share.

I was in the Army and spent 11 months in Bosnia. For my 21st birthday, I was given permission to visit Budapest for a week with other soldiers as part of a rest and relaxation trip. The other people I was with wanted to visit a “psychic” and so I went along. During someone’s reading, the psychic looks at me and says “I’m getting this feeling that there’s a presence on your right shoulder.” I shrugged it off as I didn’t believe any of that.

A few years later, when I was stationed in Maryland, I went to a Baltimore Orioles game. I got there early, so I decided to walk around the Inner Harbor. There was a psychic there and so I decided to see what she had to say. The first thing she said to me was “I sense something on your right shoulder, like a presence.”

I paid her and left.

I wasn’t a practicing Christian during these two encounters but I recognized them as being inherently evil. I don’t, however, have any explanation for how these two women “sensed” the same thing. Kind of scary.

I thank God I found my way to the Catholic church!

What do we love? I’d get a rush if some “reader” told me I was a holy person. (I wish that were true!)

People who believe in reincarnation want to be old souls, because that lessens their chances of having to come back as a chicken or something.

We tend to remember those who tell us that we *are *what we want to be, and forget (or dismiss) those who don’t.

“Shamans and fortune-tellers,” eh? Harumph. Phony shamans and fortune tellers are good at cold reading. Even those who believe in their own “powers” are usually happy to take money off a rich, silly Westerner.

My Lakota friends call them “summer Indians,” because they only want to be around when the weather is good. Perish forbid that they have to leave the sweatlodge and go into a blizzard!

Of course, I too have been told I am an “old soul.” And the two Lakota shamans I knew both said I had power with animals - but that one’s true! 😉 Of course, I understand how it works. If there’s anything supernatural about it, it’s a gift from God.

Damooster, maybe it was an angel on your shoulder…

Maybe it was your guardian angel telling you not to believe any of this stuff, and then telling you it was evil. Glad you’re coming home!!!

Most think you go through thousands of lives, and the ones with the interesting stories are the ones you need to remember so as to understand better what you’re supposed to learn this time around. They think the purpose of life is to learn one lesson per go-round, the more difficult and important the lesson, the more melodrama in the lifetime. So they kind of assume they were latrine cleaners more often than not, but that those lives weren’t worth remembering. When I was into that, most of my friends thought they had always known one another and had all been in various romantic triangles with intrigue and poisonings and everthing. Some supposed past lives were poor and obscure, yet full of drama, so therefore worth recalling. The problem was the gaps in historic knowledge. While regressed, we kept giving away the fact that we hadn’t been in ancient Sumer or wherever, and that we certainly had never been scheming apothecaries’ daughters, or tragic adventurers, because we got the facts all wrong.🤷

Hey, never let the facts get in the way of a good story!

I will say that makes sense. I would want to forget cleaning chamber pots, too
 
I have never bellieved in any of these things, in fact, gone out of my way to avoid them.

However, throughout my life I have seen surrounding some people, including some priests, what seems to be a sort of translucent “halo” or “aura”. I mentioned this to my mother ans she said, “You are seeing things!” A man I didn’t, and don’t, know detected this and said it is some kind of “gift”.

Maybe with age creeping on ever more rapidly, it’ll go away.

I’m no saint, but with God’s Grace, I will be some day.

And we can pray that God will open the eyes of those following false religions to true faith in Him.

You are right, this isn’t explained by cold reading or chance if it is repeated to her by many differnet people in different circumstances without her sharing any previous information.

It is a good question, and I am not able to give you an answer. I think there are two most likely explanations. The first is that the woman is being deliberately deceived by a spirit, and the spirit is communicating with the readers, as someone else said. The second is that the readers are picking up on some kind of true information that is being twisted to fit their own religious world-view. Perhaps she is gifted with animals, and the reader is picking up that information through forbidden occult means, and then interpreting that as she was previously reincarnated as an animal. So, something spiritually true but inaccessible by the normal senses is being interpreted in an un-truthful and harmful manner.
