Hi! I am a new subscriber and was recently asked by a nephew about some books he was reading and being strongly influenced by. The titles are: “The Disappearance of the Universe,” and " Access the Power of Your Higher Self." Does anyone have any suggestions for solid Catholic books that might help him to find a more solid personal spirituality? Nancy

We are doing one now in the Book Club. The Immitation of Christ by Thomas a Kempis.

Hello Nancy, the first thing I’d say is to run a mile at top speed away from anything to do with New Age!

I used to read a lot of New Age books and got sucked in for a few
years (until I went to Lourdes). Beware the wickedness and snares of the devil! I used to think that the Catholic Church just didn’t provide the answers that I was looking for and that’s why I turned to Yoga and meditation.

Yoga basically teaches that we can only become
self-realized/enlightened through meditation and that basically we are divine beings that have become separated from God. It teaches that as our consciousness expands we gradually become “one” with the Universe and eventually we come to know the mind of God! What proud/conceited nonsense! We are mere creatures and if we live according to His will, we will through His goodness and mercy share in His eternal happiness.

Anything which tells you that man has all the answers and that ignores God is prideful and arrogant and can only be the work of the devil…

I’d suggest reading these classics…
  • Life of Jesus Christ and Biblical Revelations - Anne Catherine Emmerich (includes the Dolorous Passion)
  • Divine Mercy in my Soul - St. Faustina
  • City of God - St. Mary of Agreda
  • Imitation of Christ - Thomas a Kempis
  • Story of a Soul - St. Terese of Lisieux
  • Screwtape letters - C.S. Lewis
  • True Devotion to Mary - St. Louis de Montfort
God bless you and you nephew,
Noel.

I am taking a different stance and not recommending those books…they are for people already grounded in the faith…if your nephew is into New Age, what you wanna do is show him the DIFFERENCE between that and Christianity and how its not conducive to Christ.

On that note I recommend:

Catholics And the New Age: By Father Mitch Pacwa of EWTN.

with all due respect, most of the books listed above are quite good orthodox Catholic spirituality, but written in an archaic English, hard to understand, and unlikely to appeal to teens or young adults. Except for CS Lewis of course who is very accessible, and Screwtape would be a great place to start.

To counter the ideas he is getting in these horrid books, try Fr. Mitch Pacwa’s tapes on the New Age (from EWTN) and We’re on a Mission From God (Ignatius) which has brief, true, orthodox presentation in modern idiom on major aspects of the faith and moral issues intended for youth, especially college age. Also anything Amy Wellborn (OSV) and Fr Stan Fortuna, which are written especially for youth addressing their concerns and giving authentic Catholic teaching. Fr. Stan has his own website, which I can’t find just now, but somebody out there must know it.
