It’s Christmas Day, and you wake up to a new car in the driveway with a big red bow on top.
This is something your spouse has not talked with you about.

I think it depends on the situation.

I put grateful…but only because we actually need a car. Hubby was rear ended the other day and it totaled the car. We are down to one, compact car for a family of four.

I might be a little bit worried only because our financial situation isn’t fantastic and the money would come directly out of our savings.

If we didn’t need a new car and he didn’t consult me on this purchase…I’d probably be mad.

If I was married, and if my husband did this, I would be very excited and happy, but only if we needed a car and if we could afford it. If he had just wasted money on it frivolously I would not be very thrilled.

My first reaction would be total excitement as I’m very much looking forward to a new car, but the worry would definitely set in as I know we can’t afford a new car right now.

At all? Is it a car she’d like or needs or has use for? Of is the giver actually gifting themselves?

I think my initial reaction would be upset and disbelief because that’s a loooooot of money for me. But if it was apparent that a lot of thought went into it and that hubs had no regrets over this whatsoever, I’ll warm up.

If hubs bought me a BMW, I’d probably be annoyed because that’s HIS dream car and very NOT mine.

If it was a blue VW Beetle, I’d be excited. It’s totally useless to me now but I’d love it to be my empty nester car if it’s still around. 😛

It would depend on whether you needed a car and also whether your husband has a history of being financially irresponsible.

I would be excited and grateful since we do actually need a new car and also my husband is fairly in touch with our financial present and future.

If on the other hand the family finances required joint managing, I’d be very annoyed by such a decision regardless of needing a car or not.

I’d laugh a lot. My husband is the kindest man and is just the sort to do something daft. 🙂

After I asked who the car was for and why we were storing it in our driveway and he told me it was for me, I might do a mini-mental status screening on him, because that would be a total…I don’t know what. We have a car for me to drive, and I like it just fine. It would be roughly the same as finding he decided to buy me a pony. 🤷

I’d be a bit mad. That isn’t something were you buy it separately. I would understand the sentiment, but you don’t make huge purchases without the other spouse’s knowledge.

I would be worried that my husband had lost his mind.

I voted grateful, because my husband would not do that unless he we needed it, he was sure I wanted it, and he himself figured out a way to afford it without it being a financial risk.

I voted other because my reaction would be directly related to our financial condition.

If we could easily afford it and it was a type they knew I wanted probably excited.

If it was something we couldn’t afford easily than mad and, I don’t know if betrayed is the right word, but definitely upset they would make such a major purchase with no discussion.

Real people don’t do this.

Actually I knew a woman who received a Mercedes for a birthday gift…just like the commercials. Her husband has a very nice career and she gave up her nursing career to care for his grandmother full time and her 2 children, one who has a debilitating disease. He thought she deserved. 🙂 They are a lovely (and loving) couple.

I voted grateful because we did get a car for an early Christmas gift. We decided on it together though so it wasn’t a surprise. Neither of us really likes surprises.

I would never do this to someone, and I wouldn’t like it if someone decided to do it to me.

I feel that when I buy a gift for my wife, she is actually giving half of it to herself, since we own everything together. So I couldn’t bear to make a decision that she wasn’t part of.

Now, if we had been discussing buying a new car - and I was absolutely sure of what her needs and desires were - and there was no question on spending that kind of money - because we were going to do it anyway - then my real gift to her was saving her all the hassle and frustration of doing the negotiations, then I might see the benefit of it.

I would not like it if someone made a major decision on my behalf without my consultation.
