There are a bunch of students at Franciscan University that run a YouTube channel called New Catholic Generation. They make lots of funny videos, and they don’t get nearly as many views as they deserve.

Yes, I’ve seen their videos and I agree that they deserve more attention.

One thing that partly characterizes them in my view is a certain lightness on content. I don’t want to be too critical here, perhaps what I like is too Heavy on content. I think some of their videos are certainly silly and light-hearted, and that’s not a bad thing. But sometimes it leaves a negative impression on me, even though in reality I think the videos are good and serve a needed purpose.

As an example, the video “8 Things you should NEVER say to a Catholic” was put out there by a core member of the New Catholic Generation. The specific member has the youtube name TheCatholicApologist. When I clicked on that video, I expected it to contain 8 answers to false claims about Catholicism. It doesn’t. What it does is fine, though: it presents 8 silly skits where somebody says something false about Catholics and TheCatholicApologist chases them with sacramentals while they run away with a cartoony kind of fright. That’s funny, but it barely teaches you anything…except that Catholics think these claims are false.

I think there should be a video with a title like that but with serious answers to 8 apologetics questions. Perhaps they could be differentiated by saying “8 things (funny)” and “8 things (serious)”. But I don’t mean this to discourage watching the video if you want to laugh at the silliness of anti-Catholic claims and if you like a somewhat cartoony and random kind of humor. I can appreciate that, but I expected more doctrinal Answers from someone called TheCatholicApologist. What he’s going for instead appears to be a kind of outreach to help Catholics understand that their faith is still fresh. We can appeal to the humor and sensibilities of the new college generation and still remain faithful to our Church’s teachings. We need videos like that, and these videos help fill that need.
