New Catholic with a question about Purgatory.

I am a recent convert to Catholicism. My Baptist father told me that Purgetory has no foundation in scripture and is completely fabricated by the Catholic Church. Is there evidence of Purgetory in the Bible? Where did the idea of Purgetory come from?
