New Ecumenical Group Forms

As the NCCB meets this week one of the items on the agenda is this:

"…Church leaders also will decide whether to join the broadest alliance of Christians ever formed in the United States. The group, called Christian Churches Together in the U.S.A., would include evangelicals, mainline Protestants, Orthodox Christians and Catholics. The group hopes to collectively represent Christian views on different issues. Catholic churches in other countries belongs to similar interdenominational organizations. …

Yes Jesus Loves me…the Bible tells me so…The first song I learned in Baptist Sunday School at about the age of 4! I think we should all be praying for an ecumenical spirit within our respective churches…“That they all may be one”… God Bless, Annunciata

The various churches could agree on the importance of social issues and work together for the common good – and leave doctrinal issues out of it! There’s a group in my city called Interfaith that does just that. They deal with legislative isses, justice issues, outreach, and other services to the poor and needy upon which all Christians can agree. All the faiths are represented.

I have serious reservations about this group. According to another recent article, the groups chairman of the board is Tim LaHaye. Yes, that Tim LaHaye; the one who co-authored the error laden “Left Behind” series of novels (which have been condemned by the Illinois Catholic Conference of Bishops), and who has several non-fiction titles (many of them blatantly anti-Catholic) to his his credit. I hope the bishops know what they are getting into.

Didn’t our recent presidential election pretty much crush all hope of that ever happening? Is it really true that the “blues” were all secular humanists wallowing in the filth of moral relativism? Many seem to see things this way.

True Christians never lose hope. Yes, the Church must struggle against those of her own children that denounce the Church’s social mission as “wallowing in the filth”. But her strong social vision lives on and cooperation with brother and sister Christians can only be a good thing.

One wonders what the collective opinion will be on non-negotiables - abortion, homosexual marriage, embryonic stem cells, euthanasia, . . .

Or are the bishops planning to negotiate.

I think there’s plenty of good work to be done as long as they don’t get lost in the minutia of theology. They could work to help the less fortunate in our society, strengthen families, and teach us not to brow beat each other over the details we disagree upon and bring us together over the HUGE detail we all agree on…Jesus is our Savior. I actually think this could help open the eyes of some of our anti-catholic, protestant brothers and sisters and help them to understand that Catholics are true Christians, too.
