I do not think it is a better understanding, rather we are suffocating our consciences with all types of nonsense so we fail to properly discern and fail to be outraged when we ought to be.
I can see granting to same-sex couples the equivalent civil rights afforded to heterosexual couples. I would not call it marriage because of the historical social meaning of marriage, but some wholly civil, non-religious recognition of a particular relationship could be allowed IMO.
The next firestorm is this. There are already lawsuits from men straight men cohabitating who wants those same civil protections as two gay men. How are we to deny them? The courts cannot simply say “you must fornicate to obtain benefits.” legally, that doesn’t hold water.
So how do we handle those lawsuits, because they are next.
