New Jerusalem Bible

I recently bought the New Jerusalem Bible from Barnes and Noble. I was happy that I bought it and I was wondering if it is a good translation. I heard many positive comments on Amazon and from people.

You might want to search through the threads. There was one that covered this subjects and I think had links to reviews of the New Jeruselum, Douy-Rheims (sp?), and NAB Bibles. Relative strengths and weaknesses as well as translation issues.

The best Bible translation is the one that is written in Ancient Hebrew and Aramaic for Old Testament and Ancient Greek for Old Testament that is penned by the original writer.

Since we cannot find such bible translation, then we have to settle to what is available to us. Basically translation of bible is categorized into 3:

1. 
   *]Literal translation
   *]Readable translation (for current modern reader)
   *]Mix between the two
   
   The literal translation offers you little help if you do not understand the underlying language of the original. Not to mention you have differences of customs, grammars and figures of speech.
   
   The readable translation gives you a good narrative flow but A LOT OF the words translated into English lost their original meanings.
   
   As the Catholic website tracts said, why settle on one translation? I know a guy who has at least 5 bibles of different translations (incl the one in Greek). Me, being a migrant to an English speaking country, has 2 (one in my native language, one bilingual Native+English) and am going to buy NRSV Catholic Ed.

I have a copy too it’s a nice translation but it’s not my main choice when consulting scripture. The Language is more gender neutral than the RSV catholic edition but it’s not as bad as some. In addition the translation is more faithful than the previous edition “the Jerusalem bible”. All in all happy reading and God Bless

+Mother Angelica of worldwide EWTN fame loved and used the . . . **1966 Jerusalem Bible ** (a paraphrase not a word for word translation) . . . in her teaching . . . but frequently sounded serious warnings about the . . . loss of Sacred Truth (Holy Thoughts of God) . . . via the unholy use of . . . “inclusive language” . . . incorporated into ALL this Bible’s versions thereafter . . .

Bishop Challoner’s edition phrases it to make it more reader-friendly. It was the only English Catholic Bible for over 300 years and has been greatly blessed of God as such. The original Latin translation is largely the result of the **Holy Spirit’s **inspiration and annointing of the labors of the blessed St. Jerome . . . and some of the manuscripts **St. Jerome **used are no longer in existence.

**NAB with Revised Psalms and Revised New Testament (1991) [also a paraphrase not a word for word translation].
